Visiting "Antiques in Doylestown", Doylestown, Pennsylvania

"Antiques in Doylestown, Pennslyvnia (near New Hope/Lambertsville: A Charming Shop in A Historic Town

Only I would set out for Lambertsville, New Jersey and New Hope, Pennsylvania (The Antique Capitol of the region) and end up wandering off the beaten path to " Antiques in Doylestown", Doylestown, Pennsylvania (27 miles from Philadelphia and about 20 minutes or less from New Hope).

When You Visit New Hope......Also Visit Doylestown, Pennsylvania

For those of you who are not familiar with the area, Lambertsville and New Hope border each other and are separated by a small easy to walk bridge. Since I was never one to follow the directions of others, I made m own road trip and stumbled across Doylestown after driving through New Hope. And I was glad I found Doylestown, (named after William Doyle).

Doylestown is 27 Miles From Philadelphia

This borough of Bucks County, outside of Philadephia (27 miles) and about twenty minutes from Lambertsville/New Hope is home to many charming boutiques and shops including "Antiques in Doylestown", owned by Elyn Kaufman.

"Antiques in Doylestown" Is A Small Sweet Shop

When I arrived, (attracted to her colorful window display), Elyn was busy wheeling and dealing over a lot of estate jewelry. I peeked over to the table where she was examining some wonderful vintage costume pieces. I could see why she was preoccupied at the time.

"Antiques in Doylestown" has the gal stuff many of us adore. Her store vignettes and displays are very attractive. I really enjoyed my visit to this small, cozy but packed shop.

I was simply excited to be in her shop and got busy snapping photos and deciding what I wanted to buy. Elyn kept asking me to come back in a half hour to interview her. "It's o.k. Elyn, I have all I need...the photos will tell the story", I told her. "And I'll email the link to my blog post", I responded to her.

But lo and behold, Elyn doesn't have or use the computer. She said she's an antique and she sell antiques and that's where the story ends. So if you know Elyn, tell her you saw this post!

Going Antiquing in Your Pajamas: Staying Warm On An Antique Social Network

Build It And They Will Visit: The Birth Of The Largest Antique Social Network, I Antique Online.com

I'm freezing my toochas (tush) off (Yiddish for derriere), so I am going antiquing online today. And my favorite social network for hunting for antiques and collectibles is I Antique Online. Of course I would give a shout out about I Antique Online.... I built it!

Antiquing Online Is A Toasty Idea

And it was the perfect toy for me...a haven for going antiquing without leaving my house. I don't have to worry about putting on three layers of clothes, shlepping around in my torn Uggs( my dog thought they were a plush toy to nibble on) or finding two gloves that actually match to each other. Yes staying home in a nice warm home office and going antiquing is a dream come true.

Schmooze With Other Passionate Collectors Online

Now don't yet me wrong, I love going out shopping and strolling Antique Malls and charming Antique shops. I am also a big fan of finding "off the beaten path" sources for vintage and collectibles. BUT sometimes I just want to go antiquing in my pajamas and schmooze with other folks who are passionate about their collections.

I Antique Online Has 6000 Members Who Collect Online

And I Antique Online.com is the perfect place to hang out and chat with others who share the collecting gene. In fact I Antique Online is approaching 6000 members with 164 Collector Group Forums and over 38,000 photos posted. Wow...I created a monster of a site, along with Scott Liscomb who is the founder of I Antique Online.com and was smart enough to bring me aboard and offer me the co- pilot position.
We now co-own the site...a business partnership of two obsessed collectors.....a "marriage" (not really) made in junk heaven.

Have You Joined I Antique Online.com Yet?

What can I say, I Antique Online.com is truly the mother load for antiques and collectibles. Gotta go.......time to nurture my family on I Antique Online, the largest social network on antiques and collectibles.

Hope to see you there......put on a pot of tea, relax and go antiquing in your pajamas.

Sparkling Vintage Christmas Holiday Ideas Using Glass And Silver Compote Bowls

How To Add Some Retro And Vintage Bling To Your Christmas Holiday Table With A Vintage Pedestal Compote Bowl

I have been out and about snapping photos of elegant holiday table decorations. You may actually have plenty of family heirlooms already at home that you can bring out for the holidays and use filled with attractive vintage or newer colorful ornament balls.

As you can see in these photos taken at The Tomato Factory in Hopewell, Pennsylvania, there are so many different kinds if bowls and vases that will work quite nicely for holiday decor.

Using A High Stemmed Or Pedestal Compote Bowl For Table Decor

One of my favorite looks is to use a high stemmed serving bowl such as a decorative compote bowl in glass or silver. A compote is a fruit dessert with is a mixture of cooked fruit. Generally the fruit is cooked on low heat to warm it and break it down gently.

Visiting H.A. Dunne And Company For Vintage New York City Memorabilia And Vintage Magazine Advertising And Paper Collectibles

Vintage Advertising And Historic New York City Photographs At H.A. Dunne And Company, New Milford, Connecticut
While antiquing and shopping in Litchfield and New Preston, Connecticut, I discovered a great source for historic New York City photographs and memorabilia at H.A. Dunne And Company in nearby New Milford , Connecticut.

Located on Litchfield Road, on a scenic route is H.A. Dunne & Company an attractive store which specializes in ephemera, photos, antique maps, and memorabilia related to New York City.

Extensive Collection Of Vintage New York City Images

According to their website, " With just over 5,000 images, mostly photographed between 1880-1950, the H.A. Dunne Archive is one of the most extensive and unique vintage NYC photo collections in the world. The majority of the images were the personal collection of Hugh A. Dunne, a life-long New Yorker who had an enduring love for his city".

Vintage Magazine Advertising Art And Covers

H.A. Dunne also carries a very large general inventory of magazine advertising art and magazine covers well categorized for easy browsing.

H.A. Dunne And Company Is A Well Organized Store For The Advertising Paper Collector

What is particularly different about this store is that they have taken the time to carefully mount their paper collectibles or frame them to be suitable as wall decor. Unlike many other shops that I have visited over the years that deal in paper collectibles and are stuffed with old magazines and piles of paper collectibles everywhere, H.A. Dunne is an upscale beautifully decorated shop with a well organized gallery of images, prints, original artwork hand made gifts, books, snow globes, historic building collectibles and more.

Obsessed Collectors Of Holiday Knick Knacks

Are You A Tchotchkaholic ...Do You Adore Holiday Knick Knacks ? Now There Is A Collector's Support Group For You Online

On the popular social network , I Antique Online.com. there is a group called "Joanie Loves Tchotchkes". Currently 37 tchotchke lovers have found each other and enjoy meeting online and discussing their passion for knick knacks, odds and ends and collectible STUFF!

Adorable Stuff We Love To Collect

Recently one of the members of the group Antiques in Bethania responded to my question about "what a 12 Step Program for tchotchke lovers might look like?". About one hour later, Antiques in Bethania added this hilarious post (reprinted below). With her permission I am sharing this fun 12 Step Program with you. I have added the photos of these adorable Christmas decorations because tis the season for collecting more knick knacks than at any other time. If I wrote this post a little earlier in the season, I would add "Chanukah" to the general theme.

The I Antique Online 12 Step Program For Tchotchkaholics
(Reprinted With Permission).

1. We admit that we are powerless over Tchotchkes —that our lives have become unmanageable due to our treasured Tchotchkes.

2. We believe that there is a power greater than ourselves which allows Tchotchkes to restore us to sanity.

3. We have therefore made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to this power as it is not us who are insane, but the rest of the world.

4. We have made a searching and fearless inventory of our Tchotchkes.

5. We have admitted to ourselves, and to other human beings that one can never have enough Tchotchkes.

6. We are entirely ready to stand up and be accounted for and to show the world our Tchotchkes.

7. We humbly ask our friends and family to understand this is not a shortcoming but is saving the destiny of something that may be destined for the trash pile.

8. We have made a list of all persons who would be harmed by this, and are willing to make amends to them all by buying more Tchotchkes.

9. We will make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others because there is no such thing as "anything you put away in a closet so no one will ever know you bought such a thing is a Tchotchke , or, "There can be, in the meaning of the word, an element of owner’s shame, or, a Tchotchke in Yiddish, "may refer to a person who is a misfit, a nobody, a slut, an ineffectual person."
.
10. We will continue to take personal inventory of our Tchotchkes and when we feel we are missing something that will bring joy to our collection, we will promptly admit it, and immediately head for the nearest antique mall.

11. We will seek mediation by our conscious contact with others who understand our need to amass Tchotchkes by keeping in mind that we, or one of our heirs could wake up one day and be a multimillionaire because of finding our hoard of Tchotchkes.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we will carry this message to Tchotchkaholics everywhere in the world and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Please feel free to add your feedback in the comment section below.

Antique Booth Display Ideas: The Importance Of Color And Charm

How to Make Your Antique Booth Shop, Kitchen Look Attractive

Every now and then you have to mix it up and change your displays in your antique shop or mall. But what do you do when you sell lots of the same colors or types of collectibles? How do you stir the pot (no pun intended) to make things look different? This post will help you begin to imagine some changes you could make to impove your antique booth space displays.

Kitsch n Stuff Kitchen Collectibles

At my humble little ole booth (kitsch n Stuff) at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford Connecticut you will find plenty of kitchen collectibles in red, yellow, blue, green or some combination of those colors.
By far I have more red and yellow or red and white items than other color combination. And after a while the displays start needing a punch in the arm to wake them up. So here are some tips to help you improve the look of your displays.

Add The Color Turquoise Or Aqua To Red Kitchen Collectibles

Believe it or not turquoise (aqua) looks great with red and yellow objects. In fact you can pair turquoise with just yellow or just red or as part of a vignette of red, yellow, white kitchenwares. And as you can see in the photos shown, the turquoise (aqua) planter sitting on a kitchen canister has a plate propped inside it. And the cornucopia planter has a colorful red and yellow hot pad tucked inside. Remember to make your collectibles do double duty!

With 1940s and 1950s Kitchen Collectibles Go For The Charming Element

This may just be my personal preference, but it has served me well. After I create a new display for my kjtchen collectibles, I stand back and look table top display or shelf that I have just completed and I ask myself, "Is it charming?" That is when I look around my booth and pull out an adorable planter or figurine or object that completes the "Is it Charming ? " test.

Use A Colorful But Not Too Busy Tablecloth Or Fabric Remnant As A Shelf Liner
When I am out shopping for kitchen collectibles, I always keep my eye out for 1940s or 1950s remnants or tablecloth cutters that could be re-cycled as shelf liners. I keep a special box of such cloths handy and bring them to my shop when I am re- decorating. This is one area that you have to experiment with your ideas.

It Doesn't Always Have To Be Matchy Matchy
Sometimes a cloth may have a color that you thought would work but ends up looking too drab. Or, if you get too matchy matchy, your display is drabby. As I have talked about before....fool around with ideas....let things happen on their own.

Collecting Barbershop And Shaving Collectibles

Old Fashioned Barber Shops Are Back In Style And So Are Vintage Shaving And Grooming Collectibles

Has anyone noticed, barbershop collectibles and advertising are hot collectibles these days. Collectors are busy hunting for vintage chairs, poles, straight razors, safety razors strops, grooming products, shaving mugs, advertising, bottles, memorabilia, old signs and more.

We Are Having A Barbershop RenaissanceAntique Barbershop Chairs, Poles, Signs

So who is buying all these relics of generations past? According to a recent article in the New York Times (The Barbershop Renaissance November 24th, 2010) there has been a growing trend in New York City to open old style neighborhood barbershops. These new barbershop owners are decorating their places with vintage barber collectibles And catch this... eBay says there has been a 77 percent increase in the sale of barber related items in the last six months.

Barbershop Collectibles And Memorabilia Cover Several Overlapping Collecting Categories

But newbies into the barbershop world have a lot of company when it comes to collectors. This is one of those areas of collecting that cross over into other categories. For example paper collectors may be after vintage barbershop advertising while knife collectors may also be interested in straight razors.

Values For "Guy Stuff" (Vintage Barbershop And Shaving Collectibles)

Now those of us in the biz have always seen a healthy interest in quality older barbershop collectibles and furnishings. But now, with so much demand for this "guy stuff", the values of these "smalls" are climbing. And dont forget the need for larger items such as vintage barber signs, antique lighting, chairs and other furnishings to complete the authentic look of an old barbershop.

National Association Of Barber Boards Of America

The Times reports that there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of licensed barbers in the last tow years. Charles Kirkpatrick, the executive officer of the National Association of Barber Boards of America says the number has increased to 245,000 up from 225,000.

When searching for barbershop collectibles you might want to also look for terms such as "safety razors", "straight razors", "shaving collectibles", "grooming collectibles", "vintage barbershop".
