A Kitchen Collectors Dream Collection

Retro Kitchen Lovers Dream Come True

I thought the only time I ever saw collections like this was in my dreams. I wish I could tell you if this is a photo from someone's collection or a showcase in a shop. But I simply do not know. I found this wonderful photo on http://pinterest.com/ravensrest/kitchen-kitsch/ .

While I am new to the website Pinterest where this photo was "pinned", I can tell you that I am having a ball looking at some very creative ideas and a gallery of amazing photos.

If anyone figures out where this photos was taken, please let me know. Thanks, Dianne

Displaying Earrings On A Vintage Grater

Displaying Your Jewelry
Retro-Hang Up

This idea is such a re-cycling gem. You hang your earrings on a vintage grater. This is one of those practical ideas that you think OMG...why didn't I think of that.
I would strongly urge you however to have more than one grater in the house.

After all you wouldn't want to disturb your earring collection when you suddenly needed to grate a carrot or a potato. No, no, you must resist the urge to double duty your grater in favor of having more than one grater on hand. One grater goes in the kitchen and the other on your vanity table. Using Old Books As Shelves To Display Your Collections

Books As Shelves

Retro Hang-Ups

I have a house filled with books. There are books in every room. Even my closets are filled with books. But what if you have a house without too many books and you want just a few?

Well here is the perfect idea for minimalists who like their walls pretty empty. Try using a few vintage books as shelves for your collections. I spotted this idea on http://pinterest.com/pin/17895045/ Let me know if you try it.

A Painted Green Shelf To Show Off A Vintage Teapot Collection

Tea For Two Or Three Or Four....

What I like about this teapot collection is that it is a mixture of old and new pots mixing together pots of all sizes and shape. The brightly painted green shelf is a winner serving as a wonderful colorful backdrop for this very eclectic collection of tea pots.

How much fun would it be to showcase your favorite collections in a special shelf like this green one shown.
You could showoff the collection of your choice such as teapots,or salt and pepper shakers or bowls etc. Once again a very sweet retro vintage inspired idea.

Stacking Old Drawers To Display Your Collections

A Groovy Way To Display Collections

What a groovy mod idea. You turn drawers on their end forming a stacked display unit which is a nifty way to show off your collections.

The best part is the funky flower draw liner which now becomes the background for the upright drawers.

These drawers were painted a wonderful Retro turquoise.
See how interesting each of the compartments look with a variety of fun objects.

Storing And Showcasing Your Vintage Kitchenwares In A Tall Glass Door Cabinet

Re-Creating A Vintage Look

One of the easiest ways to recreate a vintage look in your kitchen is to add a tall free standing glass door cabinet to show off your vintage kitchen collectibles. You can find an old cabinet or alter the look of a new cabinet to create a vintage look.

Many lovers of vintage style, not only collect housewares and kitchen-wares of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s but they actually use what they own.

Cabinets with glass doors are practical because you can actually easily see what you have. In the photo shown, adorable vintage shelf liners are used which adds some organizing elements and charm to this white painted cabinet which
really adds charm.

Decorating With Pastel Color Kitchen Collectibles

Grouping Pastel Color Collectibles

I discovered some fabulous photos of kitchen collectibles on Picasa by Sharon Harris.

This collection of pastel colored kitchen-wares and planters is so exciting that I am tempted to go out tomorrow and try this combination of colors for myself.

On the top shelf is a set of yellow Ransburg kitchen canisters. Using the colors of the flowers on the canister set, this gal than added all of her aqua, pink, yellow and mint green vases and planters.

What a wonderful Retro sweet cottage look this is!

Decorating Your Vintage Cottage Kitchen In French Blue And White

A Charming Cottage Style Kitchen

Blue and White are kitchen colors which to me are timeless. The French blue painted walls and white cabinets and appliances are simply delicious together. Blue and white dinner plates, platters and accessories are mounted on the walls and filled in the open cabinets. Here is where a collection of Flow Blue collectibles is a wonderful addition. And notice the touch of red in the flowers on the table to give the look an extra special zing!

Reupholstering A 1930's Armchair In Cottage Style

A Vintage Cottage Style Chair That Is Comfy

This 1930's armchair chair had become tired and dreary so Claire who blogs at Vintage Home asked her friend Nikki who blogs at Nostalgia at the Stone House
to make a slip cover for the chair. Claire writes that she is always changing her mind about colors, patterns and styles so a chair that is eclectic is just right for her.

According to Claire: "There is such a lovely variety of fabrics here; old Sanderson linen; 50s roses cotton; French florals; rosey barkcloth - all stitched together in a charming patchwork!"

Is this chair a treasure? Has anyone tried this?

Virtue Brothers of California Chrome Dinettes: Retro Tables and Chairs

Atomic Age Chrome And Formica Tables
I frequently hunt for old catalogs and magazine advertisements to help me date and identify kitchen collectibles and furnishings. These wonderful 1950's Virtue Chrome Dinette table and chair advertisements were spotted at http://lindathompson.blogspot.com along with Linda's tale of how she found the Formica table of her dreams for peanuts.

1950's Kitchen Tables

For me, what is great about finding old advertisements is that you get a chance to see how the original tables and chairs were sold. You can review the style of the legs, the color of seat covers as well as the Formica table top.

Mix and Match

I often find sellers who have married chairs to tables. For the home owner who wants a Retro look and doesn't need to have a completely original set, mixing and matching is fine.

But it sure is fun to see how these wonderful table and chairs look as they were originally sold.

Go Vintage For Formal Evening Fashion Handbags And Accessories

Shopping For Fancy Evening Handbags

Try to shop for " After Five" evening bags and dressy accessories in August or early September and you will find out that the pickings are slim. I have made the rounds to all the department stores and discount stores and there are few formal handbags to be found. Prom season is behind us and the holiday season is not yet here, and either is the holiday fashion accessories. The glitz is not out yet.

Is The Glitz Gone?

Perhaps with the economy in such sad shape the new glitz is almost gone. Have you noticed that
the boutiques have all disappeared and finer stores keep a lot less inventory and variety?

And when you do find a new handbag or evening purse, they are made very poorly or too expensive for the workmanship.

Vintage To the Rescue

But what about vintage? Once you make the leap to look for vintage evening bags, you are in an entirely different place. Now you will find a lot of options. In fact I am finding that more and more Antique Malls or Group shops are featuring dealers of vintage clothing and fashion accessories.

The Burlington Inn Antique Center on Route 4 in Burlington, CT has a lovely selection of formal accessories as well as clothing. You will find plenty of glitzy handbags as well as compacts, jewelry, shoes and other dressy items.

Other antique stores in the area that feature vintage clothing are "The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford",(New Hartford, CT), "Antiques On The Farmington", (Collinsville, CT) "Old Carriage Shop" (Bantam CT).

"Yard Shadow Tin Men" Made of Recycled Cans And Kitchen Funnels

These "Yard Shadow Tim Men" were spotted outside the Burlington Inn Antique Center on Route 4 in Burlington, CT. Crafted by Gerald Hayes of Torrington, CT, these metal men are made from old cans and plastic funnels spray painted for their hats.

Gerald referred to them as " Yard Shadows", so I decided to look into the term. What I discovered is that most "Yard Shadows" are made from wood and often time painted black to look like silhouettes. Some artist do paint them in different colors They are intended as yard art or ornamentation.

I guess Gerald has upgraded his yard art to three dimensional. If you have more info on this subject, by all means chime in! You can reach Gerald at 860-482-5201

Building Collections With Vintage Industrial Springs

Quirky Shoppers Adore Old Factory Springs

You have to be fast when you shop at the Junk Shop of Canton. When you spot something new and interesting, you must act quickly because funky stuff does not last long in this stuffed shop on Route 44 in Canton, CT. These heavy duty industrial springs caught my attention during my last visit to the Junk Shop of Canton. I had no idea what I would do with them in my home but that didn't stop the gal who was shopping in the store at the same time.

She was a seasoned quirky shopper who loves to build collections of odd shapes, materials and subject matter. She sprung into action and grabbed these great springs. You snooze, you lose.

Using Vintage Tablecloths To Skirt An Old Sink

Vintage Cottage Style Kitchen

Using Vintage Tablecloths To Skirt Around an Old Sink

I had to share with you this darling photo of a cottage style kitchen with an old sink that is skirted with vintage tablecloths. Often you can find tablecloths called "cutters" which are damaged and suitable for sewing projects. For smaller sinks such as in a bathroom, you can use one tablecloth. Here several pieces of different tablecloth remnants are used. Look how the bricks behind the sink are painted a bright Sunflower yellow. The yellow picks up the color in several of the tablecloths which are draped around this terrific deep sink.

What is great about adding a skirt to the sink is that you gain storage space behind the draping. this pretty idea was shared by the folks at http://www.countryplans.com/leblanc.html

My Vintage Suburban Life: Junk In The Trunk

Suburban Antique Pickers Rejoice

I opened up the trunk of my car to unload my grocery bags from the wagon and found a few of the items that I bought at my last "pick". Nothing as exciting as what The American Pickers come up with...no, no, my picks are sweet and sentimental.

What's In The Trunk Of My Car

Currently in my trunk is a 1950's cake saver, a small pile of lace doilies, an old tablecloth, a lovely framed portrait of a Victorian Era lady, some vintage tins and an old postcard or two.

My Vintage Life

So back to unpacking my groceries. I push my collectibles to the back of the trunk to make room for my groceries and I'm warmly reflecting on the combination of collectibles and groceries. This is "my vintage life". It is so natural for me to have milk, eggs, bread and old stuff mingling together on any given day. Keeping company in the back of my Subaru, you might find some used books (crammed into the side pockets of the trunk) along with some plastic doggie poop bags and spare dog food. Life in suburbia!

Fancy Cars Are Not For Antique Pickers

This is "My Vintage Life" and I wouldn't trade it in for another life style. Last weekend a guest arrived in a tiny fancy convertible car. For fun, I asked if I could climb into the driver's side to see what it might be like to sit behind the wheel of a little tiny weenie convertible.
"No, problem, go ahead and try it", my friend said. O.k., I got my middle aged, pear shaped bod into the front seat and looked around.

Room For Kitsch n Stuff
I looked behind me and noticed a few overstuffed small shopping bags stuffed into the narrow space behind the two front seats. No way could I live my vintage life in this sample size car. There would be no room for my junk. Case closed.

Using An Old Wicker Head Board To Display Vintage Tea Towels

Hanging Vintage Hand Or Tea Towels On An Old Wicker Headboard

Retro Hang-Up Idea

Here is another cute idea for hanging up vintage tea towels or hand towels in your antique shop or booth. This dealer took an old Wicker headboard and mounted it on the wall of her booth at Antiques On The Farminton, Collinsville .

She then draped her tea towels and hand towels across the bottom rung of the headboard. You will notice a few towels that were hung a little higher than the rest. A great idea.....

You will find more clever display ideas when you visit her booth which is on the second floor of Antiques On The Farmington.

Displaying Vintage Hankies On A Wire Hat Stand

Handkerchiefs Look Sweet Displayed On A Wire Hat Stand

Adorable is how these colorful vintage hankies look when folder and tucked into the base of a wire hat stand. You can find lots of wire hat stands online. Just do a Google search "wire hat stands" and you will find plenty of sources.

And you could also "double duty" this display idea by adding a vintage hat to the top of the hat stand.
This cute prop was on display at "Antiques On The Farmington, Collinsville, CT
