Collecting Vintage Thanksgiving Magazine Cover Art
Thanksgiving Themes On Vintage Magazine Covers
Here are some lovely vintage magazine cover art with whimsical Thanksgiving scenes. These covers all have a very graphic style on black or dark backgrounds.
Covers with attractive artwork have more value because many buyers will frame these covers and use as wall decor.
Vintage Magazine Cover Art
The question is often asked if a seller should pull apart a magazine and sell the covers and inside advertisements separately? Let me respond by saying that often the cover art yields more than selling the
magazine intact, especially if the cover art is by a notable illustrator.
Vintage Child Life Magazine
Child Life Magazine (began in 1922). I usually pick up these magazine for $6.00- 10.00 each. Child Life covers have some of the most endearing and colorful covers . The magazine recently stopped publishing according to my research. It is worth noting that Child Life Magazine is a great place to find information on vintage toys (see their toy advertisements).
Vintage Collier's Magazine
Collier's Magazine ran from 1888-1957. I have often found Collier's from the 1940s selling for $6.00-10.00. Maxfield Parish covers (1904-1936) are very collectible and can sell for $75.00-150.00. For more information, consult Old Magazines By Richard Clear (Collectorbooks.com).
Old Magazine Covers As Wall Decor
The next time you are thinking about some adorable wall decor ideas, consider using vintage magazine covers and some vintage frames that are easy to find. You can always take the existing art or photograph out of an old frame and substitute an old magazine cover.

Griswold Street Antiques Is Owned By Designer Jarrett Harrigan
While the store does have many very beautiful pieces of china, silver, glassware, jewelry, lighting and wall decor furniture, there are also plenty of choices for wonderful Country furnishings and collectibles, Vintage and Retro kitchenwares , textiles, Mid-Century, Victorian and more.
Griswold Antiques Is An Eclectic Antique Store

Really, there are options for all budgets and you will be made to feel at home in this popular shop located East of Hartford in the lovely town of Glastonbury.
Jarrett really has an eye for design and you will find many smaller collections with an artsy presentation such as a really funky grouping of vintage metal hose nozzles as well as other unusual found objects.
I came home with a HUGE Imari bowl filled with conch shells, shown above. I also bought a very well made smaller Mahogany bookcase. I was very pleased with my little shopping spree and I intend to go back for more real soon.

Retro Kitsch in The Kitchen For The Holidays
Tis the season to decorate the kitchen and home for the holidays. One easy way to bring a cozy Vintage look into your house is to look for kitchen collectibles that are red and white or
red, white and green.
Grouping Similar Colors Together For A Festive Vintage Holiday
I have selected some of my favorite photos to show you how delicious red, green and white kitchen collectible look when grouped together. Now only the first photo is actually Christmas themed, but you can see how festive the other items look in the holiday colors. And you could of course use these collectibles throughout the year or save them for the holidays.
1940s And 1950s Colors Of Red, Green, White
During the 1940s and 1950s,colors of red, green, white was a very common color palette and so there a plenty of housewares and kitchen-wares in these colors. When you combine these colors you get a very warm feeling.
Traditional Holiday Decorating
The nice part about collecting vintage housewares and kitchen items is that these collectibles are both
practical and decorative. this is a nice way to bring the holiday colors into your kitchen or dining area.
Festive Kitchen Ideas From The Kitschy Collector
Here are some kitchenwares to look for :
1. Tea towels
2. Tablecloths
3. Kitchen Canisters
4. Bread box
5. Tumblers
6. Red and white scale
7. Planters
8. Bowls
And for the most part, you will find that the prices for kitchen collectibles are quite reasonable so that you will really be able to freshen up your kitchen for the holidays on a budget.

Visiting J.P. Finishing Touches In Unionville, Connecticut : Great Antiques And Collectibles In A Former Railroad Depot
J.P. Finishing Touches: A Former Railroad Depot Transformed Into An Antique Shop Stuffed With Fresh Finds
Tucked away in Unioville, Connecticut which is part of Farmington in Connecticut's lovely Farmington Valley is J.P. Finishing Touches a former railroad depot transformed into an Antique and Collectibles shop.
The antiques and collectibles are always changing in this crammed two level smaller Multi-dealer store which offers a wide range of goodies fairly priced. This is not a prissy shop..it is a fun place to really hunt for the treasures.
Retro, Country, Vintage Collectibles In A Former Railroad Depot
I visited the shop recently and found a collection of old beaded handbags as well as vintage shoes which were recently acquired from a Consignment shop that had closed. There are plenty of Retro kitchen collectibles at J.P. Finishing Touches as well as Country collectibles, toys, pottery, barware, vintage lamps, vanity items, ceramics, glassware and more. This is one of those shops that has a mixture of odds and ends and also some really nice collectibles buried under the STUFF which is everywhere.
A Great Porch With Great Bargains At J.P. Finishing Touches
The porch was also loaded with recent acquisitions such as two cottage style wash stands painted in light blue and mint green. They were thirty five dollars each...a true bargain!
I may go back and get the green one . I was so busy photographing the wonderful collectibles that I ran out of steam to load the wash stand into my car. (And it was freezing out).

Junk Decorating: Making The Leap To Decorate With Great Junk You Find While On A Junk Junket
To Decorate With Junk Or Not To Decorate With Junk: What Shall The Kitschy Collector Do?
I wish I had the courage to become more daring in my decorating at home and actually return home with some of the quirky things I spot when I am out Junking. I mean, why can I write about kooky, chippy, rusty, maimed antiques and collectibles and then pause when it comes to bringing those babes home into MY house? Or why is that I can imagine how wonderful some of these funky objects would be as decorative accessories but I can't make the jump to bring them home. They might go into my shop...but not my home (YET).
Spotting Good Junk When On A Junk Junket
I see a lot of goofy and crazy stuff when I am on one of my JUNK junkets (which is almost everyday). In fact as soon as I finish this post, I'll be out the gate. Returning to my existential junk dilemma. Why do I have such a hard time bringing home some of the junk I fall in love with? I do come from a long line of creative junksters (who had lovely homes)...junk is in our genes...so what's the problem here?
Some Junk Is Great Junk
I'll photograph junk, I'll write about junk, but I haven't made the big leap yet to bring junk home. Oh yes, I do bring home odds and ends here and there, but I haven't brought home any major junk pieces or oddities.
Is It Junk Or A Decorating Accessory?
And while it is on my mind, isn't it curious how when you find something you like at a Junk Shop it stays as "junk" in your mind, but when the same piece is placed in a glass showcase in a high end Antique store it becomes "a decorative accessory".
It's All In The Presentation: Including JUNK
I always thought that everything is "presentation" ....my goodness, do you know how many Antique dealers get their stuff from their town dump? Don't even think too hard here ......I'm telling you...so many "treasures" you adore were picked by dealers at dumps!
I'm vowing this New Year to breakthrough my junk resistance and to really own the junk I dearly worship.

Vintage Inspired Handmade Christmas Gifts
From The Studio Of Elizabeth Holcombe
You will just melt when yo see these vintage inspired holiday crafts from the studio of Elizabeth Holcombe. Everything this gal makes just excites the creativity zone in my brain.
Making Vintage Holiday Decorations And Christmas Gifts
Handmade Christmas Pincushions
Elizabeth uses vintage trim, charms, buttons, ribbons, orphaned salt and pepper shakers, novelty items, floral supplies and more to create her signature pieces which are handmade pincushions.
Creating Vintage Christmas And Holiday Crafts
She is combines newer materials, but the look is always reminiscent of earlier times, when homemade Christmas ornaments and decorations was a family tradition.
Having Your Own Style:
In one of my early conversations with Elizabeth we talked about folks who try to imitate other artists. I assured her, that no one could be her.
For example, no matter how hard I tried, I could not think up and execute the beautiful work that Elizabeth is known for. She has a very own style and it is simply precious. At this time of the year Elizabeth is her charming pincushions with vintage Christmas related ornaments.
Homemade By Elizabeth Holcombe
The Kitschy Collector found Elizabeth Holcombe a few years back and featured some of her vintage inspired crafts in "Hot Cottage collectibles For Vintage Style Homes". I was delighted to see how she was a very thrifty crafter, saving and using what many of us discard.
Becoming A Thrift Crafter Is A Good Idea
I now look at broken collectibles very differently. Now I wonder if something could be used as part of a vintage craft idea or assembled into a mixed media art piece. And if you are not a saver but would like to try making vintage Christmas or Holiday crafts, you can always go hunting on Etsy.com, a place where you will find lots of craft supplies, both new and vintage.
Handmade Christmas Corsages
Now it's time to show you some of Elizabeth's current collections for sale which include pin cushions, Christmas corsages and holiday decorations.
Elizabeth is now featured in the Winter 2010 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors Studios!

Buying Vintage Enamel Cookware, Bakeware, Ovenware And Roasting Pans
Where To Find A Huge Collection Of Vintage Enamel Ovenware, Cookware, Bakeware, Roasting Pans
The Flea Market At The Crossing, Plainville, Connecticut is a great place to find old kitchen-wares, especially Enamel cookware, ovenware and roasting pans.
You will find two floors of dealers at The Flea Market at The Crossing. On the second floor towards the back is a Bob who has the booth with a HUGE selection of housewares, pots and pans, glassware and kitchen collectibles galore. Truthfully I have never seen so many pots and pans in one location.
Where Does Bob Find All These Vintage Pots And Pans ?
I'm not sure where Bob is doing his house calls or his picking, but he sure does run into a lot of sellers who must of done a fair amount of cooking back in the day. Now if The kitschy Collector is being perfectly honest with my readers, I have to tell you that while Bob has got the best collection around.... don't expect to be shopping at The Five & Dime. Bob's booth is competitive with the other Antique shops in the area. (Code for "he ain't cheap").
Vintage Roasting Pans
This time of year, many folks are getting ready to cook holiday meals. Bob has a great selection of vintage Roasting pans. These are the heavy enamel ones that you just can't find anymore.
Hot Kitchen And Home Collectibles of The 30s, 40s, 50s
You will find an entire section in my book Hot Kitchen And Home Collectibles of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s about Porcelain Enamelware covering the history of Enamelware, photos of collectibles and vintage advertising on Enamelware.
The Flea Market is housed in a building owned by Matt and Lydia of H & B Woodworking. The Market opened in 1999 and is open every weekend from 9:00-3:00

Antique Mall Booth Display Ideas: Stacking Works Well
Stacking Kitchen Collectibles on Adorable Shelves or Doll Cupboards
Here are some of my secrets for getting more space in my Antique mall booth, :Kitsch n Stuff" at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut.
Using Vintage Childrens Cupboards In Your Display
I use the "stacking" method to create very exciting displays using small Children's cupboards which sit on the floor or cute smaller shelves which can sit on top of a larger shelf.
Gaining Vertical Space In An Antique Mall Booth Space
Both of these ideas allow me to create more display space in tight areas or to build up and gain vertical space. The trick is to keep important collectibles within reach of the buyer. It's o.k. to add collectibles on top of very tall shelves but I generally reserve that option for hatboxes or very large advertising tins.
Red And White Vintage Doll Cupboard
For sellers of vintage kitchen-ares, red or red and white shelves are very effective for displaying older kitchen collectibles. By using cute shelve filled with advertising tins or smalls, in your display, people get the idea of how they might start a collection at home

Retro Chic At Valley Farm Antiques In Essex, Connecticut
Mid-Century Furnishings And Hip Collectibles At Valley Farm Antiques On Connecticut's Shoreline
Valley Farm Antiques in Essex, Connecticut right on the border of Old Saybrook on Route 154 is a Multi-Dealer Antique Store with many furnishings and decor which will remind you of Retro Chic (50s & 60s).
Retro SoHo In Connecticut
Now let me clarify what I am saying.....this converted barn is loaded with antiques and collectibles from different decades but there is a
Retro SoHo flavor to this shop which is quite evident.
The shop is very colorful and very different from some of the more formal shops in the area.
Original Abstract Paintings At Valley Farm Antiques
Located on Connecticut's Shoreline this shop is on two very expansive levels, with plenty of Shabby Chic outside and in the extra garage. This Antique Shop has plenty of secret hiding places. You will also find lots of abstract original paintings done by the owners husband, a;long with plenty of antique and vintage books to browse.
Old Old Barn Filled With Hips Antiques And Collectibles
While one might expect to find Country collectibles in this old barn, you will be delighted to learn that the look and feel of the place is a bit more eclectic leaning toward Mid Century and Hip Sixties. Another surprise is that the main portion of the shop has many glass showcases filled with elegant glassware, jewelry, silver, table top collectibles, toys, vanity items and more.

Gain More Storage Space Using An Old Dresser Wardrobe Cabinet For Your Vacuum And Cleaning Supplies
Storing Your Cleaning Supplies In An Old Free Standing Painted Dresser-Wardrobe In Your Bathroom
While poking around in the Powder Room of Korlates Fitness & Pilates in Avon, CT. I discovered a very handy dandy idea. Owner Kris, converted an old upright dresser wardrobe cabinet into a storage unit for his utilities and cleaning supplies for his studio.
Look At These Deep Drawers
Now while he was busy getting ready for our exercise session, I was sneaking a look behind the doors and drawers of this white painted dresser to see what he keeps inside.
How Clever: Storing A Vacuum Inside An Old Wardrobe
And lo and behold, I found his vacuum in the larger compartment and paper towels and cleaning supplies in the drawers. Now that's a clever way to gain a closet!
Adding Charming And Artsy Drawer Knobs
I took a close shot of this dresser drawer to show you how charming a funky drawer knob can be when added to your dresser. You can find artsy door knobs online. by the way, notice how deep these drawers are....that is what you want to look for.
Where To Find Old Furniture?
You can pick up old dressers in a lot of affordable places such as used furniture stores, junk shops, thrift shops, flea markets and consignment stores. I have often seen these cabinets unpainted in their original wood, but what's a little white paint to complete your Cottage Chic look? And because you are using this dresser for bathroom storage you need not be too fussy about condition, especially if you are painting it.

Using A Vintage Metal Candy Rack To Display Old Photographs For Sale In Your Antique Shop
Lots Of Photo Fun When You Use An Old Metal Candy Rack To Display Vintage Photographs
Here is a kitschy idea that I spotted at Burlington Inn Antiques in Burlington, Connecticut. The gals at this Multi-dealer shop on Route 4 took a old metal candy rack and loaded it with vintage photographs they are selling. What i llike about this idea is the mis-match of the items for sale and the display rack being used. This type of presentation confuses the shopper and created interest so that you stop and look at the items for sale.
Keeping Old Photographs Organized
The neat part of this idea is that there are compartments which make it very easy to display your old photos which are of different sizes. Everything stays neat and organized which is always a help when you selling paper items.
In another post I did, I mentioned how at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT. took a large vintage candy rack and used it to display free magazines, event announcements and other promotional material that you generally find at the counter or in the front of a store.

Buying Older Kitchen-wares
When selecting older kitchen wares to use, be sure that the inside surfaces of tin items are free of rust and that pottery and glass housewares such as kitchen bowls, jars or vases are not cracked or chipped.

Older kitchen-wares such as, Tole trays, bowls, plates, scales, jars, tins, baskets and more are easy to find and can warm up any style kitchen, especially during the holidays.
Decorating Versus Using Vintage Kitchen-wares
It is a different story if you are only using a vintage kitchenware as a shelf piece or for decoration, but if you intend to use these objects for food or liquid you need to be sure they can safely handle the job.

A lovely way to dress up your kitchen and home for the holidays is to add some red vintage kitchen accessories which are both practical and decorative. You will find some lovely vintage kitchen items at http://www.etsy.com/shop/kelleystreetvintage
Buying Older Kitchen-wares
When selecting older kitchen wares to use, be sure that the inside surfaces of tin items are free of rust and that pottery and glass housewares such as kitchen bowls, jars or vases are not cracked or chipped.
Using Elegant Vintage Red Tole Trays To Serve Your holiday Guests Or To Display As Wall Decor
Vintage Red Toile Transfer Plates Look Beautiful During The Holidays
Red toile transfer plates look great hung on the wall or used on a holiday table. Tole trays can also be used as wall decor or taken down at this time and used for serving holiday guests.
Holiday Cookies In Vintage Jars

"Better Giving By Kipling": An Artsy Gift And Decorating Boutique In Avon, Connecticut
Distinctive Gifts, Affordable Style At Better Giving By Kipling
Better Giving By Kipling, an artsy gift boutique in Avon, Connecticut has opened its door to rave reviews. Kipling Gottshall, a perky, highly engaging gal with lots of energy and design pizazz has really created an upscale (but very affordable) shoppe specializing in distinctive gifts and home decor.
Watching Kipling Unpack Her Collections
Over the last few weeks, I have watched in excitement as Kipling was unpacking her amazing collections and showcasing her unique accessories, paintings, serving pieces, table top gifts, jewelry and more in this gorgeous shop located in the center of Avon on Route 44.
A New gift Store In Avon, CT
Starting out as a successful online store, Better Giving By Kipling now has a beautiful showroom with a selection of unique gifts and decorative items that you probably have not seen before or certainly not in The Valley.
Featuring The Beatriz Ball Collection
Decorative accents include, candle holders, trays, pottery planters, woven table top trays, Mango wood trays, decorative pottery and more. Kipling carries the Beatriz Ball collection which is simply elegant and should really please all the Brides-to-Be and others who appreciate hand crafted metalware by artisans.
Totes, Jewelry, European Soaps, Jewelry And More At Better Giving By Kipling
And beyond decor, you will fall in love with adorable totes and handbags, chunky beaded jewelry, European soaps, barware, notecards, colorful paper goods, designer tees and more.
Antiques, Original Paintings, Prints, On Of A Kind
One of the special ingredients of this new boutiques is the "marriage" of old and new. You will find an ever changing gallery of fine antique furnishings, handcrafted wall decor, and original paintings. I especially liked the fancy memo boards, custom made using beautiful old frames and fabric. The best part of Kipling's boutique is that everything looks very expensive but you will be surprised to find out how well priced her collections are.
