Introducing The Atomic Era

What is meant by Atomic Era Decor and Design in kitchens? When you are searching for 1950's kitchen and home collectibles you will often see the term "Atomic Era" or "Atomic Age". In fact there is a magazine called "Atomic Ranch", http://www.atomic-ranch.com/ dedicated to this Mid-Century phase in home decor. But what do we mean by this term?

Postwar influences on Design

Atomic Era Design generally refers to the postwar period (second World War) when manufacturers were introducing into the home, products, materials and patterns influenced by the war effort and wartime research. The term also refers to designs influenced by "The Space Age" .

1950's Technological Boom

There was a technological boom as state of the art materials, plastic laminates, synthetics, fiberglass, latex foam was "shaping" American homes in the postwar years. Plastics could be molded into asymmetric and organic shapes. Wires and metals were constructed to form "hair pin" legs on furnishings and used commonly in modern sculpture like design throughout the home. Aluminum and chrome dominated cookwares, barware and leisure time.

Decorative Arts 50's

According to Charlotte and Peter Fiell in their superb book, "Decorative Art 50's (Taschne), "designers were inspired by a wide range of themes such as molecular chemistry, nuclear physics, sicence fiction, African art and abstract contemporary sculpture by such artists as Alexander Calder and Hans Arp. The spiky angular forms of the early 1950's gave way to more organic and biomorphic shapes as the decade progressed".

Shaping the 50's

You will see that during the 1950's textiles, coffee tables, end tables, dinettes, lamps, housewares, wall decor, accessories etc. were designed with amoeba or boomerang shapes, geometric patterns, space age designs, star bursts and abstract motif. Cookware, coffee pots, snack sets, punch bowls, serving pieces often were designed with 'leg" or platform bases which resembled rocket design....ready to take off into the future!

These are hip black and white Pyrex bowls with an Atomic Era pattern that I spotted at The Seymour Antiques Company in Seymour, CT Once again, I regret not having picked these up, they are so Retro cool. Not sure who the manufacturer is and pattern  names, so if my readers know, please leave a comment.

Inside Sue's Kitchen: A 1930's Kitchenalia Collector

I just had to share with you this collection of 1930's kitchenalia. I was poking around the web and I spotted this wonder blog Kitty's Vintage And Kitsch. You know with a blog name like that, that I, "The Kitsch Collector" would immediately take notice. In the photo shown, Kitty is showing off a friend named Sue's kitchen. Look at all the enamelware in classic cream and green 1930's colors.  I adore the coffee pots with their traditional goose neck spouts. I wonder if Sue uses these kitchen tools and accessories? There is nothing like using old kitchen tools in the kitchen....look how long they have lasted!

Stylish Red And White Retro Kitchen

When Is A Kitchen Retro ?  

What do  you think of when someone says "Retro kitchen" ? Are you thinking "pink and turquoise" ? What about "orange and yellow". Or even "lime green and black"?  Retro seems to mean different things to people depending on when they grew up. But is can also refer to a style which emphasizes whimsy, new interpretations of older looks and novel color combinations.

The Red And White Vintage Kitchen

As you already know if you have been following my blog or reading my books, I have a special place in my heart for "red and white" kitchens. I love the look of a red and white vintage kitchen.I just don't think of "red and white" as Retro. Now it's interesting, if you add a black and white or even large red and white tiled floor to a kitchen and accessorize with vintage red and white kitchen collectibles,  bingo...you are in the Retro zone.

Basically "Retro" is when the outcome is hip, cool, design conscious.  You can be stylish or
grandma-ish! It all depends on how you "put it together".

Creating A Retro Inspired Display Space Outdoors: Great For Antique Or Craft Dealers

Red, White, Black Retro Kiosk For Outdoor Craft Show

While visiting the Christmas Holiday Market in Union Squjre New York I was amazed to find a street vendor who converted his tiny kiosk into a RETRO inspired selling space. He used a Formica table top on top of a red painted file cabinet to shocase some of his handcrafted wares. The drawers served as
a useful space to store receipts, supplies and other materials needed to conduct his business.

And what about the black and white floor? Mind you this little space was no bigger than a tiny walk in closet. How clever was this use of space?

Painting An Old Kitchen Table White With Cherries

Charming Red And White Vintage Kitchen Table With Cherries

I recently spotted this wonderful old wooden kitchen table that was given a new life when the owner painted the table top white and added retro style red cherries.

Cherries Were Popular In the 1940s

Cherries were a favorite design in the 1940s , being used on kitchen products, aprons, textiles, clothing and more. Over the years many designers have brought back cherries to create the vintage look.

Painting An Old Kitchen Table White

Often you will come across an old kitchen table at a yard sale or in a shop and parts of it might be in very rough condition. Well here is the perfect solution, WHITE paint. With a little bit of attention to sanding the surface of the table and the right paint and finish, you can transform a junky table into a work of art!

Use A Stencil Or Free Hand To Paint Cherries

As you can see in these photos, the table top was painted white and red cherries and polka dots were added. You can make your own stencil of cherries or buy a stencil already made in a craft store. You can also paint the cherries free hand.

Adding Black Polka Dots

Look how nicely, red and white accessories look on top of the table. You will also notice black polka dots on the table top design. There is nothing as striking as red, white and some black accents. Vintage chairs were also painted white and the cherry motif was added to the chair seats. This is a very sweet set.

A Painted Green Shelf To Show Off A Vintage Teapot Collection

Tea For Two Or Three Or Four....

What I like about this teapot collection is that it is a mixture of old and new pots mixing together pots of all sizes and shape. The brightly painted green shelf is a winner serving as a wonderful colorful backdrop for this very eclectic collection of tea pots.

How much fun would it be to showcase your favorite collections in a special shelf like this green one shown.
You could showoff the collection of your choice such as teapots,or salt and pepper shakers or bowls etc. Once again a very sweet retro vintage inspired idea.

Finding Thermo-Temp Retro Plastic Burlap Raffiaware For Your Retro Kitchen

Entertaining With 1950s's Thermo-Temp Picnic Wares

It's always fun to find collectibles in their original boxes. I am continuously amazed that people have so many goodies tucked away in their basements or garages.

Vintage Plastic Raffiaware Popular In The Kitchen

In these photos I snapped at Antiques On The Farmington in Collinsville, CT, the dealer was showing off a wonderful insulated plastic ice bucket and also a retro fabulous pitcher. Both were in a style called "Raffiaware' which was a popular style in the 1950's. Both items were in mint condition.

Should I buy These Vintage Picnic Wares?

I was tempted to but these gems, but I paused for two reasons. While these fun collectibles were recently popular (after Martha Stewart did a featured article about them...interest has now slowed down,. They are tough sellers.

Can You Put Plastic Kitchen-ware In The Dishwasher ?

The other reason I personally did not scoop them up for my own home use is that I'd be worried about putting them in the dish washer and the stability of older plastics, especially when there are layers of plastic such as found with the Raffiaware pattern of a imitation basket weave. Most of the kitchen-wares of the 1950s were made of Polystyrene and Polyethylene.

I Sure Could Use A Vintage Plastic Ice Bucket

You know as I am writing this, I am thinking more about them.....I suppose I really wouldn't have to worry about the ice bucket. I could just rinse it out after use. And the pitcher...what's one item to wash.

Retro Regrets

Hmm........I've fallen in love with them again....perhaps I will take a visit to Antiques on The Farmington today and see if they are still there!

I have paired aqua, yellow, lime and jade colored vintage pottery together to form a very delightful and fresh look in my neutral toned kitchen.

Glazed planters, vases, teapots, pitchers are displayed in many different areas of my kitchen. And I am still adding more pieces to the collection as I find them when I am out shopping at flea markets, shops and second hand stores.

Vary The Shapes And Sizes of Vintage Pottery

It is important to vary the shapes and sizes but also to keep some organization by repeating complimentary colors. I have found that aqua, yellow, lime green and Jade go together beautifully. The yellow color seems to perk up the collection offering just a little change and excitement.

Sometimes, I will add yellow flowers to a Jade vase for the same element of freshness.

Dating Old Kitchen Enamelware Pots By Color

Retro Kitchen Pots Come In A Variety of Colors: From Pastels to Harvest Colors

This photo of sauce pots that I spotted at The Seymour Antiques Company, Seymour, CT offers me an opportunity to talk about using color to determine the age of kitchen-wares.

For those of you who are familiar with my book "Hot Kitchen and Home Collectibles of the 30s, 40s, 50s Second Edition" (Collectorbooks.com) you may remember that I included a ice chapter on Enamelware.

In summary, pastel colors were popular in the 1950s. Red and white was an earlier color combination. Green (as shown) was moving into the 1960s, become more Muddy into the 70s. Although not shown, other Harvests colors such as Gold, Brown, Orange were also Disco Decade 70s colors.

Today I began my YELLOW and BLACK journey for kitchen collectibles. I have so much fun putting together different color combinations in my shop "Kitsch n Stuff". And it is time for a marriage of yellow and black.

"If the wall around the kitchen sink is not tiled, put a large piece of thin table oilcloth on it.
fitted carefully around the sink itself, fastened with thumb tacks, or better, if possible, with a narrow molding which will hold closely to the wall. Splashings of water or grease can be wiped from the oilcloth much more easily than from the wall"

You'll Find Plenty Of Red And White Vintage Housewares And Kitchen Collectibles At Kitsch n Stuff

My shop Kitsch n Stuff is packed with lots of red and white kitchen collectibles.
I am delighted with the look of red and white, colors that remind me of visiting my Grandma's kitchen in Brooklyn, New York. Many of the items that she had in her kitchen were from the 1940s when red and white kitchens were popular.

It is not a price guide, but rather a very comprehensive compendium of manufacturers reprinted catalog pages.

My shop Kitsch n Stuff at the Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford is loaded with retro pantry items from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. I have such a good time finding vintage products that still have the labels intact and even may have the contents inside.

And of course whenever I find red and white or red and yellow kitchen kitsch, you know it will be hard for me to turn it down. So right now in my shop you can find plenty of advertising tins, pantry collectibles, spice tins, baking soda tins, laundry detergent, soaps, cleansers etc. Spice tins are really in demand these days and the prices are climbing!

Old kitchen products from the Mid-Century years are generally very reasonably priced so that this is really a great collecting hobby for limited budgets. People always ask me about my kitchen -wares collection, and the answer is that I built it one item at a time. You have to start somewhere.

Tips About Buying 1930s, 1940s & 1950s Pantry Products And Advertising Products

1, Consider having a theme such as "baking powder tins", "spice tins', "coffee tins".
2. Be ultra careful about cleaning jars that have paper labels, wipe with a damp cloth ever so carefully, avoiding the paper label.

3. Don't mess with the inside of the jar. If possible keep the contents intact (unless there is a science experiment going on or bugs".

4. 1930s collectibles will fetch more money than later decades. Gorgeous graphics and calligraphy increase the price on older paper label and tin collectibles .

5. While there are plenty of kitchen themed advertising items that can be found for reasonable, prices, it is best to get acquainted with the subject matter. Some items are in a class by themselves and are more competitive collectibles such as Campbells, Black Americana, Cream of Wheat, "Borden's Elsie The Cow" , "Jello". etc.

I just love the combination of red and green...it so reminds me of visiting both of my grandmothers when I was growing up. Yellow and red kitchen-wares are another favorite combination for me.

Dutch Themed Kitchen Collectibles

And isn't the Dutch planter sweet as can be? What a lovely addition this planter would make in a Retro cottage kitchen.

Red Ransburg Bread Box

The top photo shows a Ransburg bread box and single canister. While the canisters are easy to find....this style bread box is not that easy to find. The exterior is in very good shape, while the interior was a bit rough. But the piece is just great. RED always a very popular color and sells well.

It's always lovely to see Antique shops decorated for the Fall season featuring all their orange, brown, green, yellow collectibles. Everyone gets in the Fall fling by adding a few pumpkins here and there and dressing up their presentations with gourds and leaves.

Add a Splash Of Turquoise

But sometimes all these "harvest colors" get a little B O R I N G ! So here is what I did in my shop "Kitsch n Stuff" , I shook up the orange groove with a jolt of TURQUOISE or AQUA. The whole thing happened by accident. I was in a re-design frenzy and when I had no place to to put the turquoise pottery planter, it landed with my orange kitchen-wares for a few moments. And then I stepped back and liked the combination. Orange and turquoise are great together......mix it up....add some excitement to your Fall decor!

P.S. Would you call the pottery turquoise or aqua?

What's Hot In Kitchen Collectibles ?

I am so pleased at the way my shop (booth) "Kitsch n Stuff" turned out at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut.

If only I could get my kitchen to look so sweet. But of course I bring all the great kitchen collectibles into my booth.

Kitsch n Stuff: Now Up-Front At Collinsville Antiques Company

To re-fresh your memory, I moved my booth from the back of this 22,000 square feet Antique Mall, to the front of the store. I took this opportunity to do a make-over, getting rid of the white elephants (stuff no one would want) and re-decorate with new ideas.

Great Summer For Rooster Collectibles But Not Pig Collectibles

While my cow collectibles had a sleepy summer, it's been a great time for roosters. They keep selling real well. Like my cows (which have gone out to pasture) my pig planters etc. are sitting way too long in my shop.

Where Oh Where Are The Piggy Collectors ?

Where oh where are the pig collectors. What I need is one obsessed piggy collector to come along and clean me out of all the pigs I have. Basically I need a pig collector to "pig out" on pigs!

But even if roosters, pigs and cows are not your thing....how about chef themed collectibles. Unique Kitchen Canister Sets

Unique vintage kitchen canisters in very good condition and priced well do sell. But the trick is finding "unique" designs. And when I do find them, I usually pay dearly and so a nice set re-sells for premium prices.
