Creating Dolls Out of Vintage Junk

I would love to be able to try my hand at making Altered Doll Assemblages out of vintage odds and ends. Like many of you who are reading my blog, we are a group that enjoys collecting and saving everything!. Right now in my garage are at least four large plastic boxes filled with "stuff" that I am saving for a future craft project (I think).

Orphaned shakers.
Missing puzzle pieces.
Lids without bottoms.
Vases without handles.
Books without covers.
Bent kitchen tools.
Dolls without legs or arms.
Cracked bowls.
Toy parts.
Naked trolls.
Twisted toy kitchen utensils.
Rusty tins.
Old keys.
Toy money.
Cups without saucers.
Maimed dolls.
Chipped figurines.
Unknown parts.
Vintage plastic lids.
Old jewelry parts.
Broken necklaces.
Torn rubber toys.
Ripped old paper fans.
Yo-Yos without string.
Thermos top.
Plastic vintage spoon.
Jar covers.
Wooden game pieces.

Surely, I could make a vintage inspired assemblage doll? So what is stopping me? I'll confess...my avoidance is related to Epoxy! After once making an assemblage for a charity auction ( I made "Mah Jongg Lady" out of a brick), I was traumatized by using Epoxy.It was an adhesive nightmare. If readers could share some tips about making doll assemblages that are user friendly...I'm willing to try. Feel free to spill the beans.

Old fashioned barbershops are back in vogue and so are the items that you would have found in these shops of yesterday. Today both owners of vintage style shops as well as collectors are after old signs, vintage hair products, safety razors, bottles, mugs, strops, brushes and more. It's not often that you come across vintage barbershop related advertising collectibles in super condition.

Today I spotted some really neat vintage promotional displays that would make a barbershop or razor collector very happy. These wonderful Eversharp Schick Razor advertising display was found at Scranton Shops in South Woodstock, CT. This Multi-dealer shop has some very interesting dealers and a constantly changing showroom.

I just had to have this very sweet 1950's children's plastic pocketbook. As soon as I spotted it at Woodstock Antiques in Woodstock, CT, I just had to have it.

Back in the 195o's you could buy a handbag like this for a few dollars. In fact you could buy 3 piece toy luggage set for little gals for $4.98.

Today if you are even lucky enough to find children's pocketbooks expect to pay $15.00 -18.00.
Children's pocketbooks in the 1950's were made to look just like mommy's. Often you might find a pocketbook sold with a matching umbrella or make believe high heel shoes. A little girl might have a pocketbook to "play house" with or to use for family outings.

I finally got over to my shop Kitsch n Stuff at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT to do a partial make-over of my booth. Inspired by some new finds that I picked up over the weekend, I rally had an easy time re-decorating "Kitsch n Stuff.

Hello Pink And Turquoise

Today I mixed Retro kitchen collectibles of pink, turquoise with some blue and white. I have to say, it all worked out quite well. The secret in mixing so many colors together is that all of the housewares and kitchen collectibles I used were from the same time period, the 1950s.

Using A Vintage Tablecloth To Organize Colors

I used a colorful 1950s's tablecloth on top of my pull out Hoosier Cabinet baking surface. Than I added a cute white and blue wooden cabinet and a nifty turquoise tiered snack tray to anchor the vignette before I added coordinated glassware, teacups, textiles etc.

A Carousel Of Retro Collectibles

One of my favorite additions was using the bottom tray of the turquoise snack tray to hold a set of Demitasse cups. How cute is that? By the way, wouldn't a grouping of cupcakes look fab on the turquoise Retro snack tray?

What Shall I Put In The Cabinet Drawers?

I also want to return to my booth and add some collectibles to the cute little drawers in the white and blue cabinet. Perhaps some jewelry or doilies? I'm not sure how much age the cabinet has, but it sure caught my eye. So sweet. Now that I think of it, this adorable cabinet would look great in a vintage nursery to organize all the baby's accessories and supplies. Or it would work in a kitchen or even powder room. So many ideas!

I am not exactly sure what to call David's style at The Collinsville Antiques Center of New Hartford. David, who has a double or is it triple booth (with one of the only windows) at the far corner of this 22,000 square feet Antique emporium features GRAND Shabby Chic!

David's Own Style

I guess that is what I will call his taste in
furnishing and decor......GRAND Shabby Chic!
It is not exactly the soft summery painted look of a beach cottage. Nor is it the rusty re-cycled look of vintage vavoom. David's style is elegant but relaxes. Traditional yet innovative . Colorful but not crazy.

Grand Shabby Chic Is Still Hot

No, no no it is David's own style which frankly is hard to describe. But, his clients are growing and David has an ever changing showroom filled with fresh finds. People are really resonating with David's makeovers.

Mixing Mid-Century With French Provincial

David mixes Mid-Century, French Provincial, Cottage, Retro and then some and comes up with a style that is unique. He is not afraid to replace the fabric on a chair or paint a dresser a new color and come up with a kicked up version of Miami Beach meets Yankee Doodle Connecticut. It is hard to describe.

Artsy Furnishings

I have seen Davids furnishings in a number of settings and he really has a way of reinterpreting vintage style that is artsy and not grandma-ish. This is so hard to explain. I guess you will just have to visit The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT to see for yourself.

What a simple decorating idea. painting old bottles with acrylic paint. Some people paint the outside of the bottle, but you can also pour the paint inside the bottle to coat the interior and then spill the excess paint out.

This idea is such a re-cycling gem. You hang your earrings on a vintage grater. This is one of those practical ideas that you think OMG...why didn't I think of that.
I would strongly urge you however to have more than one grater in the house.

After all you wouldn't want to disturb your earring collection when you suddenly needed to grate a carrot or a potato. No, no, you must resist the urge to double duty your grater in favor of having more than one grater on hand. One grater goes in the kitchen and the other on your vanity table. I discovered some fabulous photos of kitchen collectibles on Picasa by Sharon Harris.

This collection of pastel colored kitchen-wares and planters is so exciting that I am tempted to go out tomorrow and try this combination of colors for myself.

On the top shelf is a set of yellow Ransburg kitchen canisters. Using the colors of the flowers on the canister set, this gal than added all of her aqua, pink, yellow and mint green vases and planters.

I thought I would share this lovely photos with you. I wish I was bold enough to bring these wonderful colors into my own kitchen. The cabinets are a warm buttery yellow, the back splash is lavender and the wall are a bright Sunflower yellow.

A Vintage Cottage Style Chair That Is Comfy

This 1930's armchair chair had become tired and dreary so Claire who blogs at Vintage Home asked her friend Nikki who blogs at Nostalgia at the Stone House
to make a slip cover for the chair. Claire writes that she is always changing her mind about colors, patterns and styles so a chair that is eclectic is just right for her.

According to Claire: "There is such a lovely variety of fabrics here; old Sanderson linen; 50s roses cotton; French florals; rosey barkcloth - all stitched together in a charming patchwork!"

I frequently hunt for old catalogs and magazine advertisements to help me date and identify kitchen collectibles and furnishings. These wonderful 1950's Virtue Chrome Dinette table and chair advertisements were spotted at http://lindathompson.blogspot.com along with Linda's tale of how she found the Formica table of her dreams for peanuts.

1950's Kitchen Tables

For me, what is great about finding old advertisements is that you get a chance to see how the original tables and chairs were sold. You can review the style of the legs, the color of seat covers as well as the Formica table top.

Mix and Match

I often find sellers who have married chairs to tables. For the home owner who wants a Retro look and doesn't need to have a completely original set, mixing and matching is fine.

But it sure is fun to see how these wonderful table and chairs look as they were originally sold.
