Decorating With Old Rattan Suitcases

When you visit Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT, you will find stacks of vintage Japanese basket suitcases displayed in all sizes, in several spots in the shop on route 44 in Canton, CT. April is a collector of these unique carfrying cases which are from the 1940s and beyond. Used for many purposes, these basket weaved suitcases appear to be made from either Bamboo or Wicker Rattan tropical grasses. She has them priced from $35-65.00.

Bamboo Versus Wicker Rattan Basket Suitcases 

If you are wondering what the difference is between Bamboo and Wicker Rattan, Wicker is made from rattan cane and Bamboo is a woody tropical grass which is hollow.

I asked April, what exactly she does with these suitcases which she has collected for years and now has brought into her shop. April said she likes to create vignettes with them and even stores some of her favortite collectibles inside. Many people alsothe larger carriers as luggage and the smaller ones for picnics.

Queen Anne Antiques, Canton, CT Features "Primitive Organic Style"

Here is a  new term I have been introduced to at Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT....."Primitifve Organic". That is how April, the owner of this wonky shop on Route 44 now describes her small but always chock filled shop. April's shop has gone through quite a metamorphorsis over the eyes. She has also moved her store several times and I follow her wherever she goes. Each time she makes a move, her shop changes and that is the fun part.

Primitive Modern Decorating With Collectibles

On a recent visit to April, I did indeed notice that her shop was looking a little different. She explained that she calls it "Primitive Organic". I have heard some people describe this type of decorating style as "Primitive Modern" or "Urban Organic".
You get the point, two or more different
decorating styles are combining featuring an updated version of a familiar yet vintage look.

Decorating With Natural Objects

In the case of the marriage of "Primitive" and "Organic" you will find lots of natural materials such as woods, twines, textiles, baskets, boxes, ceramics, handmade and functional
objects used.

The style has a very tropical or travelled influence. Yet there are also the additions of what we think of as "Primitives" such as tinware, metal containers, early collectibles and antiques.

Antiquing In Charming Canton, CT On Route 44: You'll Like Queen Anne Antiques Faboulous Things

One of my favorite smaller antique shops in Canton, CT , Queen Anne Antiques, just moved her shop from the back of her plaza to a front spot right on Route 44. Besides having a new home, April also has a new name, "Queen Anne Fabulous Things". Now, I have followed this shop as it has morphed from it's original pre-Canton days of "country" to it's current incarnation. All I can say is April is really developing her own unique style and I don't know how to describe it.

Boho Chic Style 

In a previous article I wrote about her as being somwhat "Bohemian Global" now. But I could also say Queen Anne Antiques is "Boho Chic".  While we generally apply Boho Chic to fashion styles which incorporate 1960's Hippie styles, I think April has successfully fused Hippie-Vintage-Chic-Industrial styles very well.

A Small Shop Packed With Vintage, Cottage, Retro, Industrial Antiques and Collectibles

As I said earlier, it is really hard to tell you what you will find at April's shop. One  thing for sure is that  you never know what you will find and you can count on her stock slways changing. Right now Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT. is on the top of my good find list after I discovered a turquoise blue 1950s foot rest there a few weeks ago. This Mid Century treasure was purchased for my art studio at The Farmington Valley Art Center in Avon, CT.

Turquoise 1950's Foot Stool?

I know it is hard to believe that you would find a hip vinyl turquoise stool at a place called Queen Anne Antiques, but that is typical of this small, tucked away popular antique shop. One often finds odds and ends that don't always seem to belong in this shop.

Styles Your Will Find At Queen Anne Antiques

At one time, April was on a kitchen collectibles kick and of course that is what attracted me to her store. But as I have explained to you before, April goes in and out of phases. Currently, aside from the fact that she allowed a 1950s hassock into the store, April 's store has no resemblance to the Atomic Era or any era for that matter that I can figure out.

From Global To Cabin Style: It's All There

A few months ago, I wrote about her "Global Style" when she seemed to have an awful lot of African masks and carved pieces keeping company with textiles from here, there and everywhere. But now most of her East meets West stuff seems to be gone.

So what is April currently collecting for the store? I guess I would have to say, cozy holiday cabin style collectibles and decor. But hurry over there, because I have no idea, what the place will look like in a week or two. Let me know what you find.

April who owns Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT. has really changed direction in her wonderful small but packed shop off Route 44 in Canton, Ct. Once a secret hiding place for all things Cottage Style, Retro and Vintage, April must be going through a totally new phase which I will call "Zen meets Global ".

Global Decorating Style

A Global Decorating Style appreciates the vast array of collectibles from all over the world. Many home owners like to mix objects, textiles and decorative accessories from far away places such as Indonesia, Africa, Japan, the Mediterranean coast. Travelers may enjoy bringing home colorful wall hangings or artwork or finding unique fabrics and textiles from other countries. Interesting patterned fabrics with vibrant colors can be used as a foundation for a wonderful global inspired room.

Global Collectibles

April seems to like keeping a nice inventory of ethnic, New Age and culturally diverse collectibles and furnishings. Slowly but surely over the last two years, April's eclectic shop has been becoming very design conscious with plenty of unique and unusual objects. Don't get me wrong, she stills has a really nice variety of kitchen collectibles, furniture, textiles, books etc., but now the shop also takes on a very artsy feel.

Looks Like Anthropologie

On a recent visit, April had lots of very interesting objects that you might see in a setting such as Anthropologie (one of my favorite stores). You will find, masks, figurines, baskets, tapestry, textiles, sculpture etc. April has loaded her store with Global collectibles. Some of these items are older, some more recent, but together the collection is worth taking a look at.

By the way,around the corner from "Queen Anne Antiques", is "The Blue House Vintage Shop". And just a few stores down is "The Junk Shop of Canton". My Multi-dealer store, Collinsville Antiques Company is down the road on Route 44 in New Hartford. This is a great area to go hunting.

Retro Kitchen Lovers Will Have A Fun Time At Queen Anne Antiques In Canton, CT

I have been out and about today checking out some of my favorite haunts for kitchen collectibles. Today I stopped into Queen Anne Antiques on Route 44 in Canton, CT.

Old New Age Versus New Old Age?

While this wonderful smaller shop carries a wide range of vintage kitchen stuff, I must say April seems to be shifting a little bit to a new age theme. She tells me that the shop's inventory varies according to what finds it's way into the store. Well when I visited Queen Anne Antiques today, it seemed like a lot of Guru goodies are landing on her lap!

Retro Housewares Are Kitschy Kool

But no need to fret...... April still has a very healthy section of vintage and retro housewares and kitchen-wares. I prefer 1950's housewares and textiles to OLD New Age such as candles, incense holders and elephants. So I was delighted to find plenty of Pyrex, enamelware and kitchen kitsch in stock. In fact if you are looking for Pyrex nesting bowls, you will find three sets of primary color bowls on hand.

Vintage Green Metal Utility Cart

My favorite funky 50's find was this neat retro green utility cart which is is shown above. You can see one of those Pyrex bowl sets sitting on the top shelf of the cart. Just seeing these housewares, brings me back to my mom's kitchen in Fresh Meadows, N.Y. I'm getting the urge for a Twinkie !

If you love retro, country and funky, you will have a nifty time at Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, Connecticut (part of The Farmington Valley Region). Take I-84 and use the Farmington exit .


Why On Earth Don't More People Antique in Connecticut?

Why on earth don't more people antique in Connecticut? We are chock full of Antique Malls and shops. Once you leave the "Gold Coast" (Southwestern portion of Fairfield County) where you will find some of the wealthiest towns in the USA (and shops that are over the top) you can actually return to the rest of the state and antique to your hearts content at all price ranges.
What i love about shopping in Connecticut is that there is so much variety for all budgets.

Antiquing In The The Farmington Valley

Take for example The Farmington Valley region (West of Hartford), this is a charming upscale area ) Avon, Simsbury, Farmington, Canton, Granby) loaded with multi-dealer Antique shops, smaller shops and my favorite kind....the so called " quasi antique-gift-second hand shop".

Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, Connecticut is in the latter category ("quasi antique- second hand shop" ). This tucked away shop off Route 44, has one of those names that sounds like a shop that belongs in "The Gold Coast".

Not Exactly Ralph Lauren...But Still Great

You might imagine that Queen Anne is a store specializing in high end British Country antiques. Perhaps Ralph Lauren is coming to mind? Nope...not the picture you should have in your head.

Retro, Country And Funky

Think about Queen Anne Antiques this way. Queen Anne is what I would call a whimsical second hand shop (Think Vintage discount ) with a nifty mix of retro, country and funky finds. Add to this formula, a great collection of gently used decorating and cookbooks; costume jewelry; vintage and not so vintage clothing; decorative accessories; cottage style furniture; linens; ceramics and a constantly changing showroom in this small but stuffed shop.

Fabulous Finds At Queen Anne Antiques

Don't misunderstand me, there are plenty of fabulous finds at Queen Anne Antiques.....but not the Sterling Silver and Art Pottery you might find in a shop on Main Street in Greenwich. You will find all kinds of pottery and lots of treasures, but
not for a King's ransom either. Queen Anne is "the queen of thrifting".
