I Antique On Blogs

How To Find Antique Blogs

Sometimes I will go out antiquing on a weekend and come home empty handed. These are the days when I return to my home office bummed out. My engines are still running with a desire to keep on hunting for more STUFF, but now the shops are all closed. But there is a great solution. I Antique on blogs.

Satisfying Your Antique Cravings

I can fill my antiquing crave by poking around on line. A really good blog about antiques and collectibles will keep me satisfied. In fact, many dealers have created blogs to supplement their online shops.

Visiting Antique Blogs You Will Enjoy

So you might ask, how do I find the blogs that are worth visiting? Here is what I do. I go to Google images and type in a certain type of collectible. Let's say "Zippy The Monkey". Than I look for really good photographs of "Zippy The Monkey" on Google images. Or perhaps, I am after "vintage Pyrex bowls". I click on a few different images that interest me and sooner or later I land on a great blog.

Blog and Shop On Antiques

And when you discover a photo that you enjoy on Google images, usually that photo leads you back to a blogger who has other things you will like as well as as a shop that goes with the blog.

You see, when you blog regularly and post wonderful images, Google finds you and your images will be showcased on Google Images. I have found a lot of great blogs this way.

Antique Social Network : I Antique With Photos

How An Antique Business Can Use Photographs Online

Did you know that you can get a lot of bang out of your buck by using "photographs" to promote your antique and collectibles business? Here is the scoop, as Editor of i Antique Online.com, one of my jobs is to review photographs posted to the site by the over 7000 members who now belong to I Antique Online.com.

How To "Feature" Photos Online

After a member uploads their photos to their "My Page", as editor, I have the option to "feature" their photo which allows their photos to run in an automatic photo slideshow on the front or Main page of I Antique Online.com.

Uploading Photos On I Antique Online.com

Uploading photos to i Antique Online.com, the largest social network on antiques and collectibles is FREE. Thousands and thousands of viewers watch the revolving photo slideshow each day on the site. I also keep adding new photos several times a day and taking off older photos so the show is fresh and exciting.

Using Good Photos Of Antiques And Collectibles On Social Networks

So if you really want to buy or sell an antiques , collectibles, or art, this is a great option for you. But I have to tell you that I am picky about what makes it to the slide show. Photos have to be clear, a close up, without writing or dates. Also, the object should be interesting and not be a photograph of bric a brac or though I do love KITSCH!

I Antique On Social Networks

I Antique On The Road And Also From The Comfort Of My Own Home

I Antique
all the time wherever I go... on the way to a family gathering, on route to a wedding, while out grocery shopping. I mean you never know when you will bump into a good tag sale or a new shop or an established Antique Mall. While my husband is busy programming his GPS (an invention I hate), I am calculating how I can get off the beaten path (suggested by the GPS) and discover some new antique haunts not necessarily on the computer's map. I sit next to my husband co pilot equipped with hand written notes, newspaper clippings and brochures that I have accumulated over the years. Good-bye GPS, hello my nose for antique shops.

Can Your Find Good Junk With A GPS?

If you really love going antiquing.... than using a GPS with a planned out route could be a problem for free spirited antique travelers. If you are like me, you have to be flexible enough to stop at all and any junk depots. And using a GPS with a planned out route could kill the thrill of getting lost in antique paradise.
I Antique in my sleep and when I am home I Antique at I Antique Online.com, the largest social network on antiques and collectibles. As I said earlier, I Antique all the time! Back to going antiquing in my car.

Now I am sure there will be those of you who point out to me that a GPS could be helpful in pointing out some shops along the way as it does for gas stations, Dunkin Donut locations, hotels etc. BUT when it comes to people like me who live to go antiquing.......a GPS is not the answer. We need to discover those hole in the wall places or yard sales that only those of us with a nose for a good joint or haunt will .

I Antique From The Comfort Of My Own Home

Now let's say that you are out shopping all day or all weekend and that you come home empty handed? It's a real let down isn't it? But there is a solution....you can antique ONLINE. That is what I do I sit down at my computer and I Antique Online at I Antique Online.com (my website).Come join me, you will love antiquing from the comfort of your own home!

Managing Online Antique Forums

Insights From A Social Network Manager

Is there a secret formula to help newbies learn the art of managing an online forum? After several years managing the Antique Social Network, I Antique Online.com without reading what the "experts" had to say, I decided to do some homework on the topic.

Is There an "Official" Way To Run An Online Community?

O.K., I have read the good, bad and the ugly and now I am ready to offer my insights on the topic. First I would like to tell you that there is no "official" way to run an online community.
Management styles seem to vary according to the personality and philosophy of the Social Network leader. Some leaders like to have a great deal of control while others take a more laid back approach. And of course there is a middle ground which offers a more flexible management approach without sacrificing the integrity of the community.

Taking The Lead From The Leader Of An Online Forum

But don't kid yourself......the members of the community often take their lead from who is running the mega group. And just like in smaller groups, the group dynamics of an online community is often influenced by the leader's personality and management styles.

Reading Books That Are
Practical And Not Filled With Thick Jargon

So it should not come as surprise to you that because there are so many different ways to interpret "running an online community" that when you read a variety of books on the subject that you will find a lot of different approaches. Most texts on this topic over the years have been very business oriented or grounded in organization or group dynamics theory . There appears to be a slower developing yet growing body of information now addressing more of the practical issues that social media managers encounter. And I am delighted to say that more and more books are easier to follow (or maybe I'm more experienced now). You will then have to decide for yourself what authors make sense to you.

Soci
al Networks Are Like Families

As Editor of I Antique Online.com, I have gotten to know a lot of very active and enthusiastic members who contribute regularly to this exciting Social Network on antiques and collectibles.

Once you become familiar on a particular online communities you get to know who the "movers and shakers" are as well as which members prefer to stay in the background.

One member may be" the soother", another one is "the leader", yet another one is the "thinker" or even the "activist" or "diplomat". You get the idea. Well what does this have to do with managing an online community? A smart manager will help their Forum facilitators get to know who is in their Group Forum.

Think of Group Forums as mini-communities of your site. Or another way to think about this, is that each Group Forum is a "group family" . Everyone who is a member of a particular Group Forum has something special to offer. Get to know what each member "brings to the table" (their resources). By doing this..... Forum Moderators or Group Moderators can maximize the available strengths and have a more effective Forum or Group .

The Nuts And Bolts Of Social Communities (No Pun Intended)

While many technically oriented books include chapters which discuss "how to grow a community", "how to increase traffic", "how to optimize content" they still do not go far enough into the nuts and bolts of managing an online community which can be made up of thousands of people of so many ages from different cultures, educational, work and social backgrounds.

These wonderful images are from the amazing Anne Taintor collections.

Antiques And Social Networking

What Would The Kitsch n Shrink Say About Antique Social Networking?

I bet you didn't know that there is a lot of similarities between managing an Antiques Social Network and leading a Group Therapy session. And I have done both over the years. When I first got involved as the Editor of I Antique Online.com, I was really in a new world. I bought lots of books about Social Media and Social Network Marketing. I also read books with titles like "Search Engine Optimization For Dummies" and books about blogging.

I was eager to learn as much as I could about the topic of Antique Social Networks. But a lot of my questions weren't being addressed in these "How To" manuals. Some would say that the nitty gritty of managing people is a bit more challenging than learning SEO. And then again some might say that mastering SEO is the kicker.

Antique Social Networks And Community Dynamics

All I can say when describing what is was like to become immersed in the dynamics of an Antique Social Community is Oy Vey! Before long, I thought I was back in my role as a Group Therapist. "This one was getting into a tangle with that one"; "another fella felt left out"; "this member felt rejected; " that member felt bullied" and on and on and on..

Yeeks.......whats going on here in the Social Network universe...it's Group Therapy all over again and I was retired! But I was ready for "Community dynamics"...I was prepared...I could tap into my group dynamic theory and make some head way.

Driving The Group Leader Crazy

For example, one of the first lessons you learn when training to become a Group Therapist is that the old members will want to keep the group the way it is and will often give a new member a hard time. The group will also test out the Group leader to see how far they can go giving a newbie a hard time before the group leader intervenes.

Poof You Are Banned

Well the same thing happens on Social Networks, the administrator functions like a Group therapist keeping everyone civil. But the beauty of managing a Social Network on antiques and collectibles is that it is NOT a Group Therapy session...when a member is annoying or too much trouble and you have tried multiple times to keep peace. All you have to do is press the delete button and poof they are banned!

Reading "The Theory and Practice of Group Therapy" (5th Edition)

So if you want to learn more about how to manage a social network or survive in a social network, you really need to reach out beyond the typical books that you will find in the sections on Social Media. You need to read books about group theory. I'm not kidding when I suggest that you order a copy of a classic called:
"The Theory and Practice of Group Therapy" (5th edition) By Irvin D. Yalom. This is where the action is, thinking outside the box of social media.

Wake Up Baby Boomers; Adding Hip Hop To Your On-Line Antique Shops

Wake Up Baby Boomers

Rock music and vintage
go together like smart phones and texting. Today music and videos are "in" and if you really want to sell your treasures......you need to become some what of a "techy" or you will fall behind.
Are y
ou Hip? Learn From Younger Collectors

If you are a younger collector/seller and you are hip...... you are probably already adding music to your websites, twittering and producing promotional videos for on line stores. So move over baby boomers, the hipsters are here and they are adding hip hop to their shops and waking up the world of collecting.

The Music Trend Online

I first noticed this musical (and visual) trend on my site http://iantiqueonline.ning.com/ where members were adding music to their profile pages or online stores. And some members added not only songs but animated backgrounds such as snow flakes falling or dashing stars etc.

In Sync or Out of Sync

At first I felt out of sync.....didn't we need the Big Band sound playing whenever 1940's collectibles were showcased? Of Elvis or Chubby Checker for 50s and beyond stuff ? But now the younger collectors are spicing up their shops with pop music which adds a whole new dimension to "vintage". And folks are sticking around these entertaining sites longer. But do buyers get distracted more easily and focus more on the music than in the vintage items for sale?

Look and Listen

For example, take a look and listen to this video made by www.ricracandbutton.etsy.com. This is a wonderful on-line store with adorable vintage and retro finds. Copy the link below and paste into your URL. (sorry to make you have to copy the link...but the easy way isn't working) . Here is the link to copy:

http://video.aol.co.uk/video-detail/ricracandbuttonsetsycom-vintage-children-bookswmv/3846948865

This popular etsy.com dealer has great music playing alongside her video of vintage children's books. Not nursery rhymes or retro music....but upbeat now stuff! Perhaps she has got the right idea about upbeat music? Take a listen...watch the show......the times they are changing. After you view the video, come back and add your comment...whaddya think?
