Collectors Enjoy Buying Kitchenwares With Original Labels And Price Markings Or Stickers

The Value Of Original Labels

I adore finding "mint' kitchen collectibles that still have the original packaging or labels or price tags intact. Thank goodness that so many folks hang onto good old stuff packed away in their cluttered basements, attics and garages. These pack rats are what keeps all of us "hunters" happy.

Handle With Care

When you do find collectibles that have original markings and labels in place, be very careful when handling and cleaning these wonderful older housewares.

I know this sounds obvious, but don't get labels wet. Use a damp cloth to wipe away dust around the label, but stay away from directly soaking the advertising or manufacturers label. Once you remove the identifying information or distort the writing with water you have lost a good deal of their history. Of course if you are buying collectibles for use in your kitchen, you will indeed have to peel away stickers etc. If possible, try to hold onto wrappings, boxes, stickers etc for later re-sale.

China Markers Used To Mark Housewares

Often Five & Dime Stores marked planters, figurines, glassware, S&P's, housewares with China or Grease Pen markers (waxed pencils). While it's usually hard to rub off China markers easily, some sellers try to "get rid of" any evidence of the cheaper price for fear that buyers will think the current price is "too much". The same logic sometimes prevails when a seller thinks about removing a paper or foil label.

Stickers, labels, tags, markings provide important information. It helps buyers and sellers identify and date these kitchen collectibles.

Made In Japan

Another important point to remember is that products have more monetary value when the original advertising label is still on. And don't be so quick to peel off a 'Made In Japan" sticker. In the collecting world, MIJ collectors are plentiful. I have heard of sellers who think people won't buy "cheap" wares. Some sellers worry that they won't get their asking price if the original price is left on an item. Not true, labels and stickers are very important...keep them on!

Why Bottles Change Color

Here is a beautiful collection of old bottles which have turned purple in color after years and years of exposure to sunlight. Bottle collectors know that the color purple results when a bottle with the chemical Manganese Dioxide is exposed to sunlight.

From Manganese Dioxide To Selenium

Glass starts off aqua-blue or green and becomes clear after manufacturers add what is known as a clarifying agent. According to The Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors, prior to World War I, Manganese Dioxide obtained primarily from Russia was used as a clarifying agent. When our source of Manganese Dioxide was cut off by German blockades, a different chemical (Selenium) was used to clarify glass.

Dating Your Purple Bottle

This is an important piece of historical information to help date bottles. Selenium does not turn bottles purple when in contact with the ultra violet rays of the sun. Since WWI began in 1914 and ended in 1918, older purple bottles would be date to the time when Manganese Dioxide was used
(prior to WWI).

Purple bottles are not only interesting to collect, they make very attractive decorative accessories
when grouped together in small collections. Look for bottles of different sizes and shapes .

Vintage Red Metal Candy Cabinets Are Great For Displays:"Everybody Loves Candy"

Bright Red Vintage Metal Candy Racks Featured At The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut

One way to bring a charming vintage look into your store or home is to use an older metal display rack as a decorative piece. Recently, I spotted two wonderful matching bright red candy racks at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford. On the top of the rack the sign reads : "Everybody Loves Candy"

As I turned the corner from where my booth is located, I practically ran into these marvelous Colorful Era displays. Probably from an old Luncheonette, old Drugstore or Candy Store, these red beauties are the cats meow!

Everybody Likes Candy

At first the racks were tagged and for sale. But when I returned a few days later, Cindy (co-owner) adopted one for her Cruisin cafe to feature snack foods and Doug (husband and co-owner), adopted the other rack for the entry way of this 22,00 square feet Antique Mall to hold free pamphlets and info about antiquing.

I'm not totally sure these fab cabinets are still for sale...BUT I just betcha they are! .

The Collinsville Antiques Company Of New Hartford, Connecticut is all geared up for the Labor Day Weekend. This has to be one of the best Antiques Malls you will ever visit.

Cindy who co-owns the store with her husband Doug runs a really fun in-house Retro Cafe.

I thought I would share some new photos of the "Cruisin Cafe", to show you how nifty this old fashioned eatery looks. This is a place that you can take the whole family to. Cindy and Doug are always adding new props to the cafe making it a destination in of itself.

With the help of Cindy's mom, the menu is delish!

She pulls out elements of the Atomic Era such as using 50s colors (reds and turquoise) as well as 50s designs i.e. polka dots (fabric shown) to bring in a hint of the funky fifties. Yet her book shelf is clearly painted in a more current shade of turquoise.

Branding Your On-line Shop

We can learn a lot from this vendor. By using a familiar style she in essence is "branding" her shop. If you look real closely at the advertisements you will not believe the prices.

Bargains At $1.89 For Bedspreads

For example...look at the bedspreads advertised as "Remarkable Values".....you're darn tootin...they were $1.89 in 1931. But look at the dresses on the opposite page of this catalog section ....they were about the same price.



Standard Pillow cases Cost 10 Cents in 1931

Take a peek at the dry goods or linens.
How about those Percale pillow cases for 10 cents.?

Now it makes sense why my grandmother had no problem embroidering her name on all her pillow cases. I wonder if grandma would feel at ease today, sewing onto a set of pillow cases that cost $24.00 a set or higher. Would Grandma start monkeying around with dry goods that cost more than 10 cents?

When you were finished ordering "wash goods" for almost pennies...you might make some really expensive purchases like a pair of shoes for $2.49 or maybe a shirt for hubby for $1.29. Those were the days......

Here is a darling collection of hand crocheted pot holders of little girl's dresses. These precious kitchen textiles would not last a day in my shop.
Dress designs were introduced in the late 1940's.

There are lots of gals who love collecting pot holders and favor hanging a variety of styles on the wall. The more unique the style, the more the price for them goes up a bit. I have seen similar pot holder dresses sell for $10.00 to 16.00 each.

I am so pleased at the way my shop (booth) "Kitsch n Stuff" turned out at The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut.

If only I could get my kitchen to look so sweet. But of course I bring all the great kitchen collectibles into my booth.

Kitsch n Stuff: Now Up-Front At Collinsville Antiques Company

To re-fresh your memory, I moved my booth from the back of this 22,000 square feet Antique Mall, to the front of the store. I took this opportunity to do a make-over, getting rid of the white elephants (stuff no one would want) and re-decorate with new ideas.

Great Summer For Rooster Collectibles But Not Pig Collectibles

While my cow collectibles had a sleepy summer, it's been a great time for roosters. They keep selling real well. Like my cows (which have gone out to pasture) my pig planters etc. are sitting way too long in my shop.

Where Oh Where Are The Piggy Collectors ?

Where oh where are the pig collectors. What I need is one obsessed piggy collector to come along and clean me out of all the pigs I have. Basically I need a pig collector to "pig out" on pigs!

Unique vintage kitchen canisters in very good condition and priced well do sell. But the trick is finding "unique" designs. And when I do find them, I usually pay dearly and so a nice set re-sells for premium prices.

Hazel Atlas Antique Car Beverage Glasses

"Gay" Glasses: Product Line Of Hazel Atlas, A Division Of Continental Can Company

I was excited to find this set of Hazel Atlas Antique Car beverage glasses still in their box in mint condition. As you can see the box is marked "Gay Glasses" and shipped in a box labeled " Continental Can Company, Inc.

You will find lots of these glasses around, generally considered a flea market or thrift store item ($1-3.00 each). But finding them in their original box add a little special element to the find. Found at JP Finishing Touches in Unionville, CT, these set of four glasses was priced at $15.00 for the set. (He had several sets).

Hazel Atlas Join CCC in Late 1950s

Hazel-Atlas became a subsidiary of Continental Can Company in the later half of the 1950's. The Continental Can Company began in in 1903 and produced metal containers and packaging. During World War II this company helped with the war effort by producing metal aircraft parts.

"In 1940 the company built plants in Canada as well. Continental continued to expand during the following decade through acquisitions, and the company entered the fields of paper and fiber containers, bottle caps, and synthetic resins". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Can_Company

In 1956 CCC acquired Hazel Atlas (the third largest glass container company) .

"Gay" Kitchenwares

As with other kitchen-wares of the times, the term "Gay" was often used. The phrase "Gay" was often used in advertisements. For example Hazel Atlas also produced "Gay Rainbow Milk and Cream Pitchers. which were featured in many magazine ads.

My belief is that after the war, the country was more relaxed and focused on the home. Times were happier and manufacturers used the phrase "gay living" and "gay home" to reflect a more
hopeful and pleasant Postwar mood. I welcome further info from readers.

Using Square Paper Lace Doilies To Trim A China Closet Shelf

Dressing up Your China Closet With Paper Doilies

Here is a real simple idea that looks so sweet inside a china closet or for use on exposed shelves. If you look real close you will see that these shelves have been dressed up with a paper lace doily. The square doily is folded on the diagonal to form a triangle. Unlike vintage textiles, the fact that this doily is made from paper, allows it to have a nice firm and crisp look.

Look For Paper Square Doilies

And when buying paper doilies you can find square doilies in 8 and 10 inch squares. There are plenty of brand new packages as well as dealers who have old stock. Remember, often older packaged doilies are yellowed inside. Which is o.k.. Just know what you choices are.

Pretty Designs Make Attractive Edgings

When shopping for paper doilies, look for ones that have a nice edging and an inside with an interesting and clear design. There are many types to look for. In this photos, the entire inside of the doily is cut out which makes the pattern very attractive when you fold the doily in half to form the triangle. In the photos shown, a lovely floral basket is centered in the design.

You can find paper doilies easily online. Also check out party supply stores and craft suppliers.

What Is Nostalgia? The Kitchen Shrink Explains

Stuck In The Past: Nostalgic Feelings

Have you ever thought of what decade you you have wanted to live in? What era are you nostalgic for? By now you can comfortably conclude that I am stuck in the late 1940's and very early 1950s.

When I discover kitchen-wares from the Postwar years, I feel like I have struck gold. It is as if I got a second chance to have a bowl of chicken soup in grandma's kitchen. Each time I go out shopping for kitchen collectibles I am reminded of
grandma's house on E. 93rd Street in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Nostalgic Tugs And Pulls

We all have our own tugs and pulls. And for many of us...the drive to go out and hunt for stuff is a desire to quiet down those tugs and pulls. Nostalgia is a yearning for the past. The roots of the word are associated with "aching" and longing for home. By the way, here is an interesting sidebar. After the Middle Ages, Nostalgia was considered a medical condition akin to melancholy.

But relax, it's not the 1500's anymore. It's o.k. to shlep around looking for antiques and collectibles..no need to worry about your sanity.

Attached To Warm Feelings

Since I grew up in the 1950s, why don't I have a craving for pink and turquoise? I love abstract barkcloth, but not in the same way as I do a planter or dish cloth from the 1940s. The answer for me is that I am swept back into my grandmother's home when I see housewares and objects

Choosing Soft Pastel Colors For Baby's Room

I have selected some lovely examples of nursery quilts in soft and sweet pastel colors. Baby blankets are often hand embroidered, knitted, quilted, made of Chenille or printed with nursery rhymes, alphabet pictures, or other child themes.

Check Over Your Vintage Baby Quilt Carefully

When buying old textiles, look for stains, tears, holes, missing stitches, worn areas discoloration,odors etc. Many gals will still buy a wonderful quilt with some minor issues if they believe they can rescue it easily.

Secret Hiding Places For Antiques And Collectibles

If you really want to find good stuff when you are out antiquing you need to look in all the wrong places. I know this must sound odd, but stick with me while I tell you about some of the best secret hiding places for finding treasures in an Antique Shop.

Tips About Where To Look For Good Ole Stuff In An Antique Shop Or Mall

Be sure to go snooping around when you stroll through an Antique Shop. Yes this is your chance to be nosy. Peek inside closed cabinet doors, especially cupboards. Open drawers, you will find lots of surprises. For example, in the Hoosier cabinet I have in my shop "Kitsch n Stuff", if you poke inside the drawers you might find pot holders, wall plaques I haven't hung up yet, tiny objects I don't know what to do with etc.

By All Means, Open Dresser Drawers

The same advice goes for dresser drawers. I have found photos, clothing, linens, jewelry, booklets, frames etc tucked away inside a dresser drawer. Sometimes the items are placed there on purpose and the objects are ready for sale and at other times, the dealer may have not yet tagged an item but would accept an offer.

Look High And Low To Find Collectibles

Another valuable tip is to look up high.... many dealers stick great items on top of their showcases or shelving units. And also look down real low. You will find lots of goodies stored under tables, on low shelves, on the floor etc.

Last tip for this post......ask the store owner if there is a "back room" or "basement" or "backyard ". A ton of stuff finds its way out of sight and you may not be aware of these secret hiding places, unless you ask.

Lake Forest Kitchen Lady carries both original 1940s and 1950s housewares and textiles as well as reproduced kitchenwares. Most of the "copies" are referred to as "vintage style". I Got "Caught" Eating At The New York Pickle Deli In Rocky Hill, Connecticut

I got caught....eating at The New York Pickle Deli, NYPD in of all places Rocky Hill, Connecticut. It was after a "big heist", that my friend Tina and I were found lunching at this regional favorite restaurant that combines good food, a love of all kinds of collectibles and an obsession with police themes.

After "The Heist" We Worked Up An Appetite

Oh by the way "the heist" wasn't really a robbery, but we did haul off a big load.....a beautiful glass, mirrored, lighted showcase for my antique shop, "Kitsch n Stuff" that I owner smacked down $200.00 in cash for a half hour earlier from a fella in a nearby condo development !

You Will Find Lots of Quirky Collections At The New York Pickle Deli (NYPD)

The knick knacks, memorabilia, collections, collectibles are everywhere (but not for sale). Truthfully it's hard to pay attention to the menu when you first arrive because there is so much to take in. But then you watch the deli sandwiches and burgers go by and you scramble to your table to capture a waitress.

Bringing New York City To Rocky, Hill Connecticut

Darlene and her husband Ken own The NYPD. When asked how the NYPD gig got started Darlene explained that her husband collected movie posters and worked used to own a Newstand in ew York City. So Darlene and Ken put together three themes when planning this deli in Rocky Hill: "NYC", "Pickles" and "Memorabilia

Highlights From The Menu

The menu reflects, owner Ken's dream to incorporate a NYPD theme into the restaurant. You will find sandwiches such as:

"Behind Bars" (Roast Beef, crisp bacon, melted cheddar cheese etc)

"Jail Bird" (Grilled Roast Turkey, sliced tomatoes, onions,melted cheese etc.).

"D.W.I" (Turkey Breast. Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese etc,).

"Assault and Battery" (Turkey and baked Ham with fresh spinach leaves, etc.)

"Missing Person" (Fresh Onions, Mushrooms, Roast Beef, Cheese, Bacon, BBQ sauce etc).

"Deputy Dawg" ( One half pound Hebrew National Hot Dog etc.).

"Best of The Wurst" (Mother Goose liverwurst piled on rye bread with the works).

I guess you are wondering if the food is any good............come on...you know be better...you can't make it into this column unless YOU ARE DELICIOUS! And for the record (not the police record) my dad owned deli's in NYC...and I have a place in my heart for good old fashioned piled high sanwiches!
