Decorating With Old Rattan Suitcases

When you visit Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT, you will find stacks of vintage Japanese basket suitcases displayed in all sizes, in several spots in the shop on route 44 in Canton, CT. April is a collector of these unique carfrying cases which are from the 1940s and beyond. Used for many purposes, these basket weaved suitcases appear to be made from either Bamboo or Wicker Rattan tropical grasses. She has them priced from $35-65.00.

Bamboo Versus Wicker Rattan Basket Suitcases 

If you are wondering what the difference is between Bamboo and Wicker Rattan, Wicker is made from rattan cane and Bamboo is a woody tropical grass which is hollow.

I asked April, what exactly she does with these suitcases which she has collected for years and now has brought into her shop. April said she likes to create vignettes with them and even stores some of her favortite collectibles inside. Many people alsothe larger carriers as luggage and the smaller ones for picnics.

I have spent a lot of time at Coffee Trade Antiques in Avon, CT  over the years. My second book "Hot Cottage Collectibles for Vintage Styule Homes" captured many of the lovely collectibles that Joan, the owner sells.

It is always a pleasure to visit her shop because she is a superb decorator and always has such charming displays. I learned so much over the years from Joan's examples. When you visit The Coffee Trade, you will find Joan's husband Dick upfront in the coffee bar area serving customers or roasting coffee beans. It is also in this area that you will find coffee and tea related housewares, gifts and of course plenty of coffee and tea beverages.

Here is a  new term I have been introduced to at Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT....."Primitifve Organic". That is how April, the owner of this wonky shop on Route 44 now describes her small but always chock filled shop. April's shop has gone through quite a metamorphorsis over the eyes. She has also moved her store several times and I follow her wherever she goes. Each time she makes a move, her shop changes and that is the fun part.

Primitive Modern Decorating With Collectibles

On a recent visit to April, I did indeed notice that her shop was looking a little different. She explained that she calls it "Primitive Organic". I have heard some people describe this type of decorating style as "Primitive Modern" or "Urban Organic".
You get the point, two or more different
decorating styles are combining featuring an updated version of a familiar yet vintage look.

Decorating With Natural Objects

In the case of the marriage of "Primitive" and "Organic" you will find lots of natural materials such as woods, twines, textiles, baskets, boxes, ceramics, handmade and functional
objects used.

The style has a very tropical or travelled influence. Yet there are also the additions of what we think of as "Primitives" such as tinware, metal containers, early collectibles and antiques.

Antique Therapy: Shopping at The Stratford Antique Center, Stratford, CT

Do You Feel Better When You Are Out Antiquing?  
 
We have all heard of retail therapy when you feel better shopping. I feel better antiquing. Don't get me wrong, I can always use a whopper dose of shopping, but for me the best medicine is not found  in a clothing store but in a junk shop or outrageoulsy large and stuffed antique center with 100-200 dealers.

Multi-Dealer Antique Centers

Multi-dealer Antique Malls are heaven for me. When I step into the door of these antique palaces, I get lost in my hunt and all the crazy preoccupations I had before entering this zone seem to melt away. My thoughts shift to looking for Mid-Century pottery or another attractive set of 1950s kitchen canisters or a colorful tablecloth without stains.

Visiting The Stratford Antique Center, Stratford, CT 

One of my primary mood boosting, cure all maladies and escape from crazy life type of places to visit and enjoy is The Stratford Antique Center in Stratford, CT.  This 16,500 square ft. building with approximately 200 dealers according to their website is AMAZING.

Offbeat Holiday Gifts AT Off The Beaten Path Places

This time of year, you can divide shoppers into   several categories according to their shopping styles and habits.

Type A Holiday Shoppers

There is of course the Type A shoppers who seek out holiday gifts with a list and a plan. These organized folks head to their nearby mall and stay focused on what they want to buy and for whom they want to gift.

Cyber Holiday Shoppers

Another large group of shoppers stays addicted to Amazon.com and other online selling sites and are people who avoid leaving their cyber world.  Don't get me wrong, I like the privacy of shopping at my desk or crunched up on the couch too, but that is not the same experience as being out in the trenches.

Junk Shoppers Unite

And then there are others who hunt for treasures anywhere and everywhere but the expected places. I feel akin with the third  group of mavericks that flock to junk stores and thrift shops trying to spot a bargain or an unusual item. And BTW,  I never bring a list with me, preferring to just fall into an unusual or kooky find for me or a loved one.

One of my chief hunting grounds at all times of the year is The Junk Shop of Canton, Canton, CT. Located right on the main road (Route 44) this very old building has been around for years, surviving hurricanes, snowstorms and maybe even plagues.

During  a recent visit to The Junk Shop of Canton, the store was stuffed to the limits. I like it when Eric, the owner has unpacked some really good truckloads of  "junk". And truthfully often Eric's "junk" is more exciting than the mainstream antique stores in the area.

Quirky Antique Displays At The English Building Market, New Haven, Ct

Kitschy Retro In Downtown New Haven, CT 

It was great to back at the kitschy English Building Market on Chapel Street in  downtown New Haven, CT.  Usually open on Sundays, last week the store was closed to the public because of a special film shoot which was in progress. But the gals were great and they let me photograph the new finds so I could share them with my readers.


I have written about this antique store before in my an earlier post called  "Retro, Vintage, Kitsch At The English Building Market". I must say that every time I visit,  the store has bold exciting displays and fresh merchandise.

Quirky Colorful Antique Displays

If you want to get an idea of what The English Building Market is, banish any stuffy antique store

from your mind. Instead think of this hip Dimestore throwback as similar in feel to the famed Anthropologie retail chain. Anthropologie is known for their quirky displays of colorful goods using  industrial props, vintage vignettes and retro kitsch.

Getting Funky With Imagination

It is always amazing to me how funky one can get with a little imagination. The English Building Market loves to marry 1970s with 1950s or mod 60's with 30's. The expansive showroom is stuffed with vintage, metro-retro and  
unique finds.

Chapel Street Attracts College Students  

Downtown New Haven is home to Yale University and an area which attracts many twenty-thirty something students  and

professionals. The English Building Market  is a popular  store for young people who like thrifty decorating and retro clothing. During my visit the store was buzzing with young gals dressing up in 1940s-1950s furs and bling for a photo shoot.

Collectors of all genres will enjoy the wide variety of retro departments at this enormous store. Do you love vintage housewares and kitschy kitchen collectibles ? I'm hooked on this retro stuff.  I have said it before, I can spend an entire afternoon washing vintage dishes, utensils and kitchenwares and yet leave a sink filled with my own family dishes left for sometime later. The thrill of the hunt is always followed by a desire to carefully unpack my treasures and then soak them in soapy water until they are nice and clean!

 Kitsch n Stuff Gets New Fall Look

It's not a common experience, but I shlepped my husband to my shop "Kitsch n Stuff" to help me decorate for the Fall season. Even though Kitsch n Stuff is filled from floor to ceiling with kitchen  collectibles and home goods, I still feel lik eI need more. So every now and then, I give myself  permission to re-invent the  visuals by adding a brand new shelf or  cabinet.

Picking Up An Old Red And Yellow Shelf  

The inspiration came from visiting the Harwinton Antiques show over Labor Day weekend. I found a wonderful vintage brushed yellow and red shelf and some cute accessories that made for a charming vignette. The problem was there was not an inch of space to  spare in my tightly packed booth at the Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut.

But with the help of my husband who often accompanies me on my junk forays, we were able to move around all the display shelves and accomplish our goal to make it all fit. So now that  I got all the fixtures to fit, and the housewares and kitchen stuff nicely in place, I will have to pull apart the whole  space again, because I bought a load of stuff yesterday. Why do we always find stuff when we are not looking for it?

1970s Collectibles Featured At Memory Too Antiques, Coventry, CT

Lots of Funky 70s Stuff At Memory Too Antiques

I love visiting a shop I have been too a dozen times or more and finding new dealers. That was the case yesterday when I ventured out to Coventry, Ct. to one of my favorite group shops, "Memory Too Antiques".  As a frequent  visitor to this shop, I know the aisles quite well. And I have a sense of comfort when I visit my favorite kitchen collector vendors. But yesterday...I had a big surprise, a new dealer who sells 1960s and 1970s STUFF Of so much fun to be had.  You couldn't miss this booth, the colors were popping out all over the place, especially ORANGE, Navy and Brown. The 1970s had colors that were slightly toned down from the Flower Power generation. Geometrics, abstracts, and bold colors were still present.

Charming French Blue Painted Shabby Chic Antique Bedroom Set Featured At "Finder's Keepers", Southington, CT

Pretty Painted Antique Furniture 

Thought I would share with you a fabulous looking Shabby Chic vintage bedroom set I spotted a few days ago  at "Finder's Keepers" in Southington, CT. This ensemble was professionally painted French Blue with Cream accents.

1930s Painted Antique Dresser 

The dresser appears to be 1930s, but the night stands while painted in the same French Blue color are probably later. I am guessing from the grill work on the night stands that they were 1950's pieces.
But the set is charming. There is as dresser, mirror, two night stands. two twin bed headboards  and a wonderful chair.

Right now Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT. is on the top of my good find list after I discovered a turquoise blue 1950s foot rest there a few weeks ago. This Mid Century treasure was purchased for my art studio at The Farmington Valley Art Center in Avon, CT.

I know it is hard to believe that you would find a hip vinyl turquoise stool at a place called Queen Anne Antiques, but that is typical of this small, tucked away popular antique shop. One often finds odds and ends that don't always seem to belong in this shop.

At one time, April was on a kitchen collectibles kick and of course that is what attracted me to her store. But as I have explained to you before, April goes in and out of phases. Currently, aside from the fact that she allowed a 1950s hassock into the store, April 's store has no resemblance to the Atomic Era or any era for that matter that I can figure out.
