I'm hooked on this retro stuff.  I have said it before, I can spend an entire afternoon washing vintage dishes, utensils and kitchenwares and yet leave a sink filled with my own family dishes left for sometime later.  Kitsch n Stuff Gets New Fall Look

It's not a common experience, but I shlepped my husband to my shop "Kitsch n Stuff" to help me decorate for the Fall season. Even though Kitsch n Stuff is filled from floor to ceiling with kitchen  collectibles and home goods, I still feel lik eI need more. So every now and then, I give myself  permission to re-invent the  visuals by adding a brand new shelf or  cabinet.

Picking Up An Old Red And Yellow Shelf  

The inspiration came from visiting the Harwinton Antiques show over Labor Day weekend. I found a wonderful vintage brushed yellow and red shelf and some cute accessories that made for a charming vignette. The problem was there was not an inch of space to  spare in my tightly packed booth at the Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, Connecticut.

But with the help of my husband who often accompanies me on my junk forays, we were able to move around all the display shelves and accomplish our goal to make it all fit. So now that  I got all the fixtures to fit, and the housewares and kitchen stuff nicely in place, I will have to pull apart the whole  space again, because I bought a load of stuff yesterday. Why do we always find stuff when we are not looking for it?

Right now Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT. is on the top of my good find list after I discovered a turquoise blue 1950s foot rest there a few weeks ago. This Mid Century treasure was purchased for my art studio at The Farmington Valley Art Center in Avon, CT.

I know it is hard to believe that you would find a hip vinyl turquoise stool at a place called Queen Anne Antiques, but that is typical of this small, tucked away popular antique shop. One often finds odds and ends that don't always seem to belong in this shop.

At one time, April was on a kitchen collectibles kick and of course that is what attracted me to her store. But as I have explained to you before, April goes in and out of phases. Currently, aside from the fact that she allowed a 1950s hassock into the store, April 's store has no resemblance to the Atomic Era or any era for that matter that I can figure out.

From Global To Cabin Style: It's All There

A few months ago, I wrote about her "Global Style" when she seemed to have an awful lot of African masks and carved pieces keeping company with textiles from here, there and everywhere. But now most of her East meets West stuff seems to be gone.

Painted Antique Cottage Furniture At Villa's Corner Gallery, Winsted, CT

Sweet Cottage Style Furniture Featured At "Villa's Corner Gallery" In Winsted, CT

For years I have driven right by "Villa's Corner Gallery" at 304 main Street in Winsted, CT, but never stopped in because I thought it was simply a showroom for their upcoming auctions and not a retail store. But a few weeks ago, I was shopping in the area and I noticed some terrific painted Cottage style furniture on the sidewalk. The colors were a delicious combination of Seafoam green and yellow.

Antique Dressers And Vintage Furnishings

Not only was there some lovely pieces on the sidewalk, but the window was filled with painted furniture and a wonderful vintage kitchen display. So of course, I had to go inside. The first floor is a jumble of antiques and collectibles, here there and everywhere. The fella who ran Villa's has passed away and his daughter is trying to straighten the place out.

You will find a more organized second floor with some very nice collections of antique furniture. Among the Oak tables , cabinets and dressers, there are also some lovely painted Cottage style furnishings in combinations of Seafoam green and yellow and also Seafvoam Green and white.

Vintage Toys At "A Step Back In Time" In Winsted, CT

It is getting harder and harder to find vintage toys and games, so when you do discover a collector who keeps his inventory fresh and fun, it's a gift. Recently, I spent an afternoon in Winsted, CT a former factory town which has become a shopping area for smaller antiques and collectibles stores and I stumbled in ""A Step Back In Time".

A Tiny Retro Toy Store With Great Stuff

"A Step In Time", located at 458 Main Street in Winsted, Connecticut is a tiny shop neatly stuffed with old toys, games, dolls, books, ephemera and some kitchen-wares. On a recent visit to this well organized shop, I came home with several bags of goodies. My prized find was a 1940s children's craft set for making flower pots and bead flowers. It was in remarkably great shape for it's age.

Collectible Toys And Games

You will find stacks of board games, collections of View Masters, piggy banks, a puzzle section, tin toys, Five and Dime plastic toys and more. On the higher shelves, you might find tin doll houses and over-sized children's games. But remember, when really collectible toys and games come into the store, they leave as quickly as they come in.

Poking Through The Piles

While I always have a great time in this tiny toy store, I must tell you that the shop has great stuff mixed up with the odds and ends. You simply have to visit often and poke around the piles, to find the gems buried by some of the bric a brac. The owner is very educated about his collections and eager to be helpful.

April who owns Queen Anne Antiques in Canton, CT. has really changed direction in her wonderful small but packed shop off Route 44 in Canton, Ct. Once a secret hiding place for all things Cottage Style, Retro and Vintage, April must be going through a totally new phase which I will call "Zen meets Global ".

Global Decorating Style

A Global Decorating Style appreciates the vast array of collectibles from all over the world. Many home owners like to mix objects, textiles and decorative accessories from far away places such as Indonesia, Africa, Japan, the Mediterranean coast. Travelers may enjoy bringing home colorful wall hangings or artwork or finding unique fabrics and textiles from other countries. Interesting patterned fabrics with vibrant colors can be used as a foundation for a wonderful global inspired room.

Global Collectibles

April seems to like keeping a nice inventory of ethnic, New Age and culturally diverse collectibles and furnishings. Slowly but surely over the last two years, April's eclectic shop has been becoming very design conscious with plenty of unique and unusual objects. Don't get me wrong, she stills has a really nice variety of kitchen collectibles, furniture, textiles, books etc., but now the shop also takes on a very artsy feel.

Looks Like Anthropologie

On a recent visit, April had lots of very interesting objects that you might see in a setting such as Anthropologie (one of my favorite stores). You will find, masks, figurines, baskets, tapestry, textiles, sculpture etc. April has loaded her store with Global collectibles. Some of these items are older, some more recent, but together the collection is worth taking a look at.

By the way,around the corner from "Queen Anne Antiques", is "The Blue House Vintage Shop". And just a few stores down is "The Junk Shop of Canton". My Multi-dealer store, Collinsville Antiques Company is down the road on Route 44 in New Hartford. This is a great area to go hunting.

I am not exactly sure what to call David's style at The Collinsville Antiques Center of New Hartford. David, who has a double or is it triple booth (with one of the only windows) at the far corner of this 22,000 square feet Antique emporium features GRAND Shabby Chic!

David's Own Style

I guess that is what I will call his taste in
furnishing and decor......GRAND Shabby Chic!
It is not exactly the soft summery painted look of a beach cottage. Nor is it the rusty re-cycled look of vintage vavoom. David's style is elegant but relaxes. Traditional yet innovative . Colorful but not crazy.

Grand Shabby Chic Is Still Hot

No, no no it is David's own style which frankly is hard to describe. But, his clients are growing and David has an ever changing showroom filled with fresh finds. People are really resonating with David's makeovers.

Mixing Mid-Century With French Provincial

David mixes Mid-Century, French Provincial, Cottage, Retro and then some and comes up with a style that is unique. He is not afraid to replace the fabric on a chair or paint a dresser a new color and come up with a kicked up version of Miami Beach meets Yankee Doodle Connecticut. It is hard to describe.

Artsy Furnishings

I have seen Davids furnishings in a number of settings and he really has a way of reinterpreting vintage style that is artsy and not grandma-ish. This is so hard to explain. I guess you will just have to visit The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT to see for yourself.

Not too long ago, a lovely group Antique shop opened on Route 4 in Burlington, CT. in the building we all fondly remember as the Burlington Inn. This Multi-Dealer Antique Center is aptly called "Burlington Inn Antiques".

Burlington Inn Antiques has a lovely collection of both traditional and whimsical antiques and collectibles. That is because the owner, Joni, (yes the same Joni of Joni's Child Care) is a spirited gal with lots of ideas and a solid business background.

Antiquing In Connecticut's Shoreline: Stopping At "Not Just A Crock" An Antique Emporium

"Not Just A Crock" on route 1 (Boston Post Road) is a sprawling Antique emporium sitting across the street from Waters Edge Resort in Westbrook, CT. This place is amazing.....you will find rooms, trailers, barns etc. filled with architectural salvage, furniture, cottage antiques and collectibles, pottery, garden antiques, primitives, kitchen collectibles, country collectibles, nautical antiques and so much more.

I loved my visit and talking with the owner who said her name was "T". She took me through all the nooks and crannies as well as through the garden, produce stand and outer building which are packed with very interesting found objects, antiques, custom furniture and vintage finds.

Lots Of Original Pottery At "Not just A Crock"

Married to a potter who has a studio on site, "T" takes great care in arranging her collectible in very unique ways. My visit was so enjoyable, I urge you to plan a visit to this part of Connecticut, known as the Connecticut shore region. Westbrook is sandwiched between Old Saybrook and Clinton, two areas where you will find other popular antique stores Clinton Antique Center (also on Route 1) as well as the Sunday, Clinton Village Antiques and Collectibles Flea Market ( 27 E. Eating In Westbrook, CT.

You already know that if I am out antiquing, I am also on the hunt for a quick but GOOD lunch or supper. So, while I am telling you about the Connecticut Shore, let me mention two favorite spots.

While everyone seems to wait on line at "Lenny and Joe's Restaurant" an excellent well known fairly priced seafood eatery in Westbrook, I prefer "Edd's Place" nearby. I usually take my Sheltie, Jacob with me and at Edd's I can sit outside and have a delicious meal without the tumult that you find at Lenny and Joe's. Both places are quite good.

"Vintage To Vogue": A Shop For Kitchen Collectibles In Putnam, Connecticut

Thought I would share with you some photos from my visit to "Vintage to Vogue Shops" in Putnam, CT. Once a Montgomery Ward store, this old building now is home to a fabulous retro-vintage shop loaded with exceptional collectibles, gifts, home decor and more.

Vintage Kitchen-wares

Of course, I am always attracted to shops with kitchen collectibles and so I was pleasantly surprised to discover a new shop with my kind of stuff! Once I stepped inside "Vintage to Vogue" a corner store at 112 Main Street in the heart of the Putnam antique shopping district, I was thrilled to find delightful colorful displays of vintage kitchen mixing bowls, teapots, piichers, glassware, advertising, textiles, appliances, mixers, canisters, cookie jars etc.

Cottage Collectibles

You will not only find lots of wonderful vintage housewares, but also a beautiful section of cottage style home accessories and floral decor. This is a really lovely store that kitschy kitchen collectors will adore.

By the way, you will also fall in love with their old fashioned candy shoppe in the front of the store.
