If you look very closely you willl note that what attracts the viewer to this charming vignette of vintage items is the variety of interesting shapes, sizes and heights. Another visual plus is the use of a black tray as the background for white and glass objects. The tray sits on an old covered basket which is another delightful display element used in this collection.

Coming Out Of Your Shell: Displaying Small Artwork In Your Antique Booth or Shop

Displaying Unframed Small Artwork In The Opening of A Vintage Planter   

It's hard to display unframed small artwork (postcard size or smaller) in a crowded Antique booth unless you use a tiny easel or lean the mini artwork up against another object. Another option is to showcase small artwork by combining it with a pottery planter or vase. In the picture shown, I have propped this little orginal canvas on top of a vintage shell motif planter. I like conserving space and having my collectibles serve dual purposes. I also use compatible colors so it looks like it makes sense.

If you have been out shopping in Antique stores or browsing through Home magazines, you will note that Blue and White antiques are back in favor once again. Some people would argue that blue and white is always in style, but I have noticed a renewed interest in these popular collectibles after a dormant period.

When displaying lots of blue and white antiques and collectibles, consider using a touch of red or orange in your display to add interest and break up the monotony of  similar colors.

Some people like to stuff their antique booth displays with a lot of collectibles believeing that you need to use up as much expensive space as you can. Other dealers prefer a more artsy look and spend time displaying their objects with just the right balance of interest, shapes, graphic appeal.

During the holiday season,  The Farmington Valley Arts Center is very busy as studios and galleries are transformed for the Candlelight season  A beautiful preview gallery was set up for artisan made holiday gifts. Look at how one-of-a kind artist designed silk scarves made by textile artist Rosalie "Lia" Lee  were used as window decor. What a clever way to brighten up any space and add a colorful engaging display to showcase these grogeous scarves.

Vintage jewelry is not the easiest item to sell in an Antique booth when you have lots of other collectibles, textiles and antiques competing for attention. The small little things such  as costume jewelry generally get lost in the avalanche of STUFF. But one clever dealer I met at the Harwinton Antiques Weekend in Harwinton , CT resolved the jewelry issue by displaying her vintage earrings on   the strings of an
old tennis racket.

What I like about this idea is how terific the aged wooden frame looks as a display prop. The display is eye catching and
invites interest.

How To Arrange And Display Antiques And Collectibles In Your Booth Or Antique Store

When you create displays for your antique and collectibles shop, it is important to keep in mind the importance of using  color, texture, shape, size in an engaging way. I always step back from my display and talk to myself. I ask myself questions like: "Is it exciting?", "Is it boring? "Is it eye catching?"

Organizing Your Antique Display Vignette  

I have written about this topic before and suggested that diplaying antiques and collectibles is like painting a picture. You look at the vignette as if it is a still like painting. In the picture shown above, the antique dealer has successfully mixed different shapes, sizes, colors and textures together. You don't always have to use objects that make sense either. While I prefer to keep the eras and styles similiar in the objects that I group together, April of "Queen Anne Antiques", is a master of combining all kinds of collectibles together. She can make great junk look AMAZING!

How To Arrange Antique And Collectible  Displays So They Look Like They Belong Together

In the top photo shown,  I love the way she added incense sticks to the blue pottery vase to help add height to her vignette. And notice how the color of  the sticks mirrors the colors in the Chinese game board which was a real eye catcher. Also do you see how the vintage orange tin is repeating the orange in the game borad cover as well. These deliberate display strategies help to organize the vignette and make the objects all look like they go together even whe they do not.

In the wooden box photos, April sticks to two main sets of colors, wood tones and silver. It's an interesting mix of color and textures.

Bob, a vendor who has a very impressive collection of Depression Glass and kitchen-wares at The Crossing Flea market in Plainville, CT is a master cup hook user.

A custom cabinet maker by trade, Bob knows his way around cupboards and shelves. So it is no surprise that Bob has figured out many clever ways to ddisplay his amazing collection of colored glasss.
Sorting Glass By Color

Bob sorts his glassware by color and then adds a particular colored piece to its proper "window" display.

Attaching Cup Hooks Under Wooden Shelves

When visiting Bob's booths at The Crossing Flea Market, you will see how he as constructed window shelves to showcase his bounty of Depression glass. But here is the icing on the cake....Bob uses lots of cup hooks along the bottom edge of each shelf to both store and exhibit the glass cups he sells.

Natural Light Shows Off The Depression Glass

As you can see in these photos, the Depression Glass looks so beautiful sitting in the windows are custom made wood shleves that support Bob's collection of colorful Depression Glass and colored glass. He has windows of green, pink, red, blue, purple and yellow glasswares.

The divided window panes and snow covered sceanary in the background frame each collection of glass beautifully. It is as if you are looking at a still lie painting. The varied shapes and sizes of the glass are artfully arranged inviting customers to do the same in their homes.
