1960s Mod Pop Kitchen

Bright, Colorful, 1960s Kitchen 

I need a little splash  today, so I thought I would re-visit the Mod Pop 1960's kitchen. The Flower Power  introduced colorful combinations of bright yellow, orange  and green.

Plastic kitchen-wares matched and giant flower designs accessorized kitchen wallpaper, place-mats, dish towels and tablecloths. 

Elements of the 1950s, such as wrought iron chair legs and vinyl seat cushions still remained. Check out the orange handled kitchen tools hanging on the wall and the egg cups on the shelf.

What a fun kitchen. Oh...how about the Flower Power oven mitt?

Mod Style Collectibles For Your Kitchen And Home

Moving Forward With The Decades Of the 1960's And 1970s

How much fun are these Mod style collectibles for your kitchen and home? Flower Power motif is very "in" right now as designers and manufacturers are re-discovering the whimsical color palettes of the 60s and 70s.

Colors of the 1960s And 1970s

When you make a trip to any home store today, you will see plenty of very exciting kitchen-wares and home accessories in both 1960s Psychedelic colors as well as more Muddy 1970's palettes or re-interpretations of these decades in newer color combinations.

Sometimes it is a little difficult to tell whether the kitchen collectibles and textiles you find are actually 1960s or 1970s, because the styles of the designs overlapped.

For a quick guide, 1970s colors included Harvest tones such as gold, olive green, burnt orange, greeny-yellow. While 1960s colors are generally brighter with orange, pink , lime green and yellow grouped together.

Invent Your Own Color Scheme

But who cares about the exact date and palette...just play with the colors and designs. You can invent your own color scheme using the older palettes as a jumping off point.
Keep your eye out for objects with designs of owls, mushrooms, flowers, butterflies, geometrics .

Anchor Your Hunt With A Sample Of Fabric

For example, if I wanted to accessorize a kitchen and home with a 60-ish feel, I might take a piece of fabric I like (such as the remnant below) and take it with me when out antiquing. With fabric in hand, I would walk up and down the aisles of an antique store or flea market looking for items with compatible colors, patterns and style. The fabric sample serves as a starting point. You have to start somewhere. Look for dish towels, tablecloths, kitchen canisters, planters, bowls, plates, pillows, clocks, coffee pots etc.

Flashback time...flower power...the sixties. Everything was decorated with big and bold colorful flowers. From drapes, to tablecloths to
upholstery fabric.... psychedelic designs of abstracts and flowers in day glow colors prevailed.

1968 Redemption Catalog

Take a look at these pages right out of a 1968 gift redemption catalog spotted at Good Lookin Vintage. Everyone had these handy folding snack tables to put their Swanson T.V. dinners on. You have to admit....the idea of a snack table is really very practical.

And what about that turquoise and floral chair
and ottoman? How groovy was that ? As I have written about before, catalogs are precious to get your hands on. If you really want to learn more about the kitsch you are collecting or selling, check out old stamp catalogs.

You will be surprised to learn that many of today's collectibles were once gift items for stamp centers such as S & H Green Stamps or hostess gifts for having home parties. Today expect to pay $12.00- 15,00 for snack trays.

These colorful Flower Power decorative accessories are made by Plonka Home . of Norway, a shop i found on Etsy.com. Created as 16 inch pillow cases, the front is original fabric and the back is a high quality linen according to their shop descriptions.

Mixing Mod With Today's Style

These bold designs of flowers, geometrics and abstracts would compliment today's "Transitional Style" where updated furniture styles are mixed with retro and vintage elements such as wall decor, pillows and textiles. Priced at $24.00 with an $8.00 shipping charge, these funky pillows are still way more reasonable than finding new pillows or having custom made pillows made from a decorating service.

Where Does Plonka Find Her Groovy Fabrics?

I'm not sure where this gal finds her fabrics, but she sure does have a beautiful collection of 1960s and 1970s patterns in a variety of authentic palettes.

Some people add pillows at the end of their decorating make-overs. But surely one could start with these pillows and build a fabulous room around them.

Influenced by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, women in the sixties adored the Pill Box hat and dressed quite
elegantly even during the day. At the beginning of the decade, ladies looked very similar to gals of the 50s.

The Shirtwaist Dress

The shirtwaist dress was popular beginning the era in solid colors, stripes and plaid and then moving into exciting florals.
"Mini-Dresses" Came Later In The Decade

Eventually, British designers would influence fashion and Mary Quant's "Mini - skirt" was in style.

Not Till Later Came The A-Line Mini Dresses
A-line "Mini" dresses and sleeveless shifts with bright large flowers in tropical and neon colors were popular later in the decade.

1963 Simplicity Patterns

But in these photos taken from a 1963 Simplicity Pattern book, the hemlines are still very conservative. Gals wore matching handbags and shoes along with coordinated hats and gloves. Simple beads or Pearls were also worn.

In the 1960's I could wear these dresses as well as mini dresses. Now as a baby boomer...I'll stick to outfits that cover the leg!
