 Antique Valentine's Day Decorating

Decorating your Antique booth or shop for Valentine's Day is easier than you think if you just use a little creativity in the process. Today I am inspired by visiting The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford Connecticut.  The photos shown were taken by me at this 22,000 square feet Antique Mall. I'd like to share some ideas with you about how to set the stage for a Valentine's look. Traditional Valentine's colors are red, pink, white so that is the palette you will be focusing on.


Ideas For Vintage Objects You Can Use For Your Valentine Display 

The first step is to sort out what antiques, collectibles, decorative accessories that you already have such as white plates, milk glass, ceramics, glassware, vases, figurines, tablecloths, lace, doilies, books, planters, jewelry etc.  Next, you may want some accent pieces such as crystal, silver candlesticks, shakers or greenery such as a plant or floral arrangement.

Creating Vignettes for Your valentine Holiday Display

After you have gathered all your "props" together in one area, your next step will be to combine objects together to tell a story or create what we call a vignette. You might find a nice tablecloth in soft colors to use along with a decorative plate or tea cup and saucer. Or you might turn a wooden box over to create a  pedestal and add objects at different heights.

While this article is suggesting that you stick with pinks, reds, whites, you can also add some soft yellow or soft mint green as long as the dominant colors are sticking with your Valentine's theme.

Planters, bowls, tureens etc. can be used to display cards, jewelry, hankies, or textiles etc.

Pretty vintage candy boxes or older tins are also lovely to use for Valentine's Day.

While you do not actually have to add hearts or Valentine'
s cards to your displays,  they are lovely additions if you have them. I have also seen people cut out red and pink hearts or add some heart shaped candy to their booth. or home decorating.

How To Decorate For The Holidays In Vintage Style Using What You Have

It's easier than you think to decorate your Antique shop or home in Vintage holiday style. On the second floor of Antiques On The Farmington, Collinsville CT., one of the dealers did a great job accessorizing her booth for the holidays. She tends to carry a lot of vintage kitchen wares as well as cottage collectibles. For the holidays, she pulled out all her greed, red and white and red and cream collectibles and used them to showcase her holiday displays.

Building Towers of Vintage Holiday Fun

A master at creating "towers", this antique dealer stacked green glass serving pieces on top of an old candy tin. She than added pine cones and other holiday decor. This stacking tower was so charming and nostalgic.

Using Natural Trim Such As Pine Cones, Berries, Branches

I loved how this dealer uses what she has on hand and then adds natural trim such as pine cones, tree twigs, berries, leaves, branches etc to her collectibles.

Pull Out Your Vintage Crystal, Silver, Milk Glass For Holiday Decorating

And you don't need an antique store to this. You can create a vintage style holiday by looking in your closets and cabinets at home.

Pull out your crystal, your milk glass and your silver. You probably have plenty hidden away in your very own China closet that yo can adapt for the holidays.

I have been out and about snapping photos of elegant holiday table decorations. You may actually have plenty of family heirlooms already at home that you can bring out for the holidays and use filled with attractive vintage or newer colorful ornament balls.

As you can see in these photos taken at The Tomato Factory in Hopewell, Pennsylvania, there are so many different kinds if bowls and vases that will work quite nicely for holiday decor.

Using A High Stemmed Or Pedestal Compote Bowl For Table Decor

One of my favorite looks is to use a high stemmed serving bowl such as a decorative compote bowl in glass or silver. A compote is a fruit dessert with is a mixture of cooked fruit. Generally the fruit is cooked on low heat to warm it and break it down gently.

Tis the season to decorate the kitchen and home for the holidays. One easy way to bring a cozy Vintage look into your house is to look for kitchen collectibles that are red and white or

I have selected some of my favorite photos to show you how delicious red, green and white kitchen collectible look when grouped together. Now only the first photo is actually Christmas themed, but you can see how festive the other items look in the holiday colors. And you could of course use these collectibles throughout the year or save them for the holidays.

1940s And 1950s Colors Of Red, Green, White

During the 1940s and 1950s,colors of red, green, white was a very common color palette and so there a plenty of housewares and kitchen-wares in these colors. When you combine these colors you get a very warm feeling.

Tole Trays Add Color During the Holidays

This holiday season ,consider serving your guests delicious appetizers and desserts on colorful hand painted vintage tole trays. Or use these attractive works of art as lovely festive wall decor.

To preserve the artist painted surface, it would be wise to cover the surface with clear plastic wrap or a piece of plexi glass.

History of Tole Trays
Tole is a French word referring to the decorative art of painting on metal-ware. Early trays (18th and 19th centuries) were called Tea boards or tea trays and were painted by a “paintress” using a “one stroke method”. These trays were painted black, often with a floral decoration hand painted or stenciled on. This form of decorative art was revived during Colonial times in New England as people often “dressed up” tin ware.

The Nashco Products Company
From the 1920’s -1950’s, The Nashco Products Co. of New York City produced numerous hand-painted tea trays in a variety of colors. You will often see colors of Chinese red, black, Wedgewood blue, sage green, cream, pink etc in a variety of shapes.

Nashco also produced bowls and vanity trays. Often the artist who painted the tray signed the piece. Nashco has an oval, silver and black paper label with block lettering. Tole trays are favorite collectible for Romantic cottage collectibles. Some collectors use their trays and others love to hang them up on a wall creating interesting wall décor.

The Value of Tole Trays
Prices continue to climb and you will see a full range of values on these items when you are out and about shopping. Condition is everything. Note scratches, paint missing, worn spots, rusting, warped trays. Most trays I have seen in New England are priced between $28.00 – 75.00.
