Collecting Vintage Poodle Collectibles: 1950s Plastic Poodle Cosmetic Bag

1950s Vintage Clear Plastic Cosmetic Bag With Poodle Graphics on Do Wah Diddy

I'm having a grand time revisiting the 1950s on one of my favorite websites, Do Wah Diddy.
Who remembers plastic cosmetic bags with poodle graphics?

Here is the Do Wah Diddy Description: 

This clear acetate bag is imprinted with “poodle” and “Eiffel” tower graphics. The graphics are enhanced with a few rhinestones (see detail photo). The top of the bag is zippered and the edges trimmed in gold foil. Inside the bag you will find 2 plastic bottles and 2 plastic jars, all with pink plastic tops (all clean with nothing left inside). Everything is in EXCELLENT condition with no tears or smudges, which is common in vintage bags such as this. The acetate is slightly yellowed from age, but this very minor and does not distract from the piece. The bottom of the bag has a light cardboard enforcement (original) and there is a faint blue stain on the bottom about 2-1/2 inches long x 1/4 inches wide (very faint). Fun item. Listed for $25.00. Vintage 1950s Poodle Laundry Hamper

Poodle Laundry Clothes Hamper on Do Wah Diddy

Flashback to 1950s Poodle Clothes Hamper spotted tis morning on Do Wah Diddy. Poodle collectors this one is for you.

 Do Wah Diddy description:

We get an occasional laundry hamper from the old days, but seldom one with such cool graphics as this example. It features a pink, gray and white poodle walking upright and carrying an umbrella. A flower cart and flowers add to the scene. The graphics are stenciled onto a textured vinyl with a swirl pattern which covers the front, sides and padded lid. The hamper is made of composition wood and metal with a wicker back. There are two handles made of clear plastic highlighted with gold glitter. The hamper stands 24-1/2 inches tall. It is 21-1/2 inches wide and 12 inches deep. It is in NEAR MINT condition with the paint, vinyl and frame all perfect. The only flaws we can point out are a couple of nicks on the wicker at the back corners (see detail photos). The nicks are minor and do not show from the front nor do they cause any problem with the function of the hamper. No markings or date, but research points to Harper Ransburg as the maker in 1955 and it seems to be a pretty rare piece. This will ship in a large box via Fedex Home Delivery for $52.95 including insurance (oversize rates apply). 1950s-60s Cory Coffee Maker Set: Another Treasure at Do Wah Diddy

I have been on a major clean out of my basement, pledging to scale down the collectibles that I have accumulated for my shop Kitsch n Stuff. Who am I kidding, I still love to find 1950s treasures while browsing some of my adored websites online. I just spotted this 1950s-60s Stovetop Cory Coffee Maker Maker on Do Wah Diddy. It is still in it's original box with four ceramic coffee mugs. The set has never been used and was probably a wedding gift. Do Wah Diddy has listed it for $65.00 which sounds about right.

Collecting Vintage Christmas Paint and Color Books

Are These 1960s Christmas Coloring Books For Saving Or Using?

If you are lucky enough to find a children's 1950s-1960s Christmas Paint and Color Book in unused fine condition I'm guessing that you will not really want to share this treasure with your kids or grandchildren. These vintage collectibles can fetch anywhere between $18.00-24.00. Sure once and awhile, I come across a coloring/paint book for much less money, but I'm still not apt to actually toy with the inside. I always get a warm nostalgic feeling whenever I see 1950's poodle themed collectibles. This sweet dish towel was found at Vintage Ringo on Etsy.com. I love the familiar 1950s color scheme of yellow and green which probably would have gone quite well with a set of Vernonware dishes.

Dish towels like this one in excellent condition usually sell for $22.00-25.00.
Sometimes you might get lucky and find a towel for less, but there are so many collectors who adore poodles and textiles that you will pay dearly.

Should Empty Nesters Who Like Collecting Downsize, Upsize Or Stay The Same Size When Buying a New Home

Are You Ready To Downsize ?

Empy Nesters Should You Downsize. Upsize Or Stay in The Same Square Feet? 

Many couples labor over whether they should "downsize" , "upsize" or stay the same size when changing homes after the kids are grown up.  To help you decide what to do I need to ask you (and others you might live with) a critical question.... Are you a hopeless collector/saver? Additonally, do you (or mate) go to Tag sales and Flea Markets regularly?

Time To Let Go And Move On...Maybe 

STOP right here if you you are indeed a shopper, collector and bona fide saver. Unless you are ready to throw out your kid's report cards from kindergarten (your kids are married with children) or dump old appliance parts...you are not truly downsize ready. The leap to a truly smaller home or apartment needs to happen gradually...when you are serious!

This is not to discourage you from moving to the Condo/cottage /apartment etc of your dreams, but to realize that downsizing takes time.

Downsizing A Home Is A Process

Downsizing is a process.  Stage one is to begin to de-clutter the family home you are living in while you are exploring new home options. You will never be totally ready for the move, so give up on the idea of getting the purging all done in time for a move. STUFF will come with you no matter what. Accept the fact that you will be revisiting your junk (the stuff you didnt get to) in your new place.

Stage two is sorting out things in your new home and thinking about a smaller place the next time you are thinking about smaller places.

Discarded Ceramic Cut-Outs In Litchfield Connecticut Shop Inspiration For Mixed Media Art

Contemporary Art Is Found Everywhere: Mixed Media Artist C.Dianne Zweig Explores The Art of Possibility 
Why do Mixed Media artists always get excited about leftovers and unusual gargage. To be   totally accurate, sometimes discarded materials aren't really garbage as is the case with this pile of cut out clay which will actually be recycled and used to make new objects. But for the moment this growing pile of hardened clay cut outs sits in the back of a gorgeous custom made tile store in Litchfield, CT. I strolled into the store lured by a fabulous window display of glazed functional pottery and custom tiles. However, I was equally excited to explore this heap of broken and left over pieces in the back corner of the shop.  To a Mixed Media Artist who lives in possibility, the art is everywhere. So what would you do with these pieces?  Stencils, Assemblage art, jewelry ? Feel free to post your ideas please.

Shopping For Retro and Vintage Hanukah

Where are all the Vintage and Retro Chanukah collectibles? I have been keeping my eye on this topic for a long time always excited to discover some l  exciting groovy to kvell over Jewish STUFF from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s.

Packing Up Mom (or Dad) For A Smaller Apartment: Describing Types of Parents

I can really weigh in on the topic of packing up mom (or dad) for a smaller apartment because as they say, "been there, done that". My experience with family members and parents of friends is that

you can divide older parents into three categories: (1) Absolute Clutterbugs (2) Minimalists (3) Flexible Flyers (don't know too many in this group).  Those in the Clutterbug category of course present the most challenge because these folks generally have great difficulty with what I'll call spacial matters. These overzealous collectors want to take everything they have previously owned and cram their stuff into smaller quarters. They have no concept of SPACE. They stack tables on top of tables, have six lamps in a room, shove boxes under tables etc. No amount of reasoning is going to help to convince a borderline hoarder to give up their belongings.

So How Do You Help Convince A Parent to Downsize 

You can try to suggest to an older parent that they have too much stuff and that they need to thin out their load....but those words generally do not penetrate. Many parents in their eighties and nineties want to be surrounded by the objects and furnishings they built a lifetime around. You can try to liquidate items behind their back, but that will backfire if your parent(s) are still quite alert and engaged in the world around them.

Use SAFETY As A Way To Encourage De-Cluttering

What sometimes works is to frame the conversation around
SAFETY.  Try saying..."the doctor (nurse, social worker, aide) is worried that your living room has too many pieces of furniture and that your walker (wheel chair, cane, etc.) will not have an easy path to the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom etc." Or you might say... "many people trip over rugs, boxes, clutter and your doctor (nurse, aide etc) wants to be sure you do not break a hip, so lets clear this room out a bit. Rooms cluttered with lots small ineffective lights, fragile items, suitcases etc. can be all be viewed in terms of safety risks. You may have a little luck getting through to a stubborn parent by playing the catastrophe card. Good luc

Collecting Vinyl Records: Back to The Future for Cool Cats

Vinyl Records Are Coming Back

From out of the blue I received an email from a journalist asking about the renewed interest in "vinyl".  The baby boomer that I am....I wondered to myself  "why on earth is vinyl of interest again?". Vinyl, vinyl, vinyl......I thought about the subject for a few seconds and realized, the gal who wrote to me is probably talking about RECORDS....vinyl records, not plastic textiles.

And yes, there is a spike in interest in not only collecting vinyl records but also in recording and listening to music on vinyl. Vinyl records are having a comeback for several reasons: the quality of recordings, the design of record covers and the love of nostalgia.

P.S. I actually saved many of my album covers and threw out the records......dumb dumb dumb.

Should You Save Vintage Baby and Nursery Clothes, Playthings and Accessories

Downsizing Your Collection of Saved Vintage Baby Clothes and Toys

It was very difficult but I finally let go of many of the boxes of old nursery toys and clothes that I was saving for my grandchildren. It was a very nice fantasy, I would pass down newborn kimonos, Stretchy pajamas, bibs, toys etc. to my grandchildren when they were born.

Time to Let Go Of Crumbling Old Baby Gear and Acessories

Ha, ha, was I mistaken. First of all if you save some of these outfits and playthings things long enough you will find out that they dry up and become brittle. Yes, the elastic on outfits crumbles. Bibs lose their softness. Clothes yellow and take on a musty smell and stains you swear you never saw before suddenly appear. Even if these nursery items are packed away in a strong plastic tote, they generally will not pass inspection by todays new parents who are even fussier than you were.

Downsizing Your Art Studio

I'm about to "downsize" my art studio which has become packed with really fabulous STUFF but is starting to cramp my style. I just know that so many of you who are reading this post understand the mind of the creative saver. I can remember thinking about the concept of re-purposing useful items way before the phrase got catchy. Let's be honest, it is hard for some of us to simply let go of potential art and craft treasures. We look at the world differently that other people. I can fondly remember strolling through Provincetown and seeing broken ceramic tiles being used as the ground cover in a trendly grocery store. I picked up a handful of these very interesting tileswith textured backs to stamp or print with in my Mixed Media work. Who am I kidding. I know that after I thin our some of my collections of artsy treasures, I will just replace them with new ones!  Feel free to comment on this post and share our experiences.

 What I love about the displaay this gal created at The Sandwich, Mass Flea Market is the use of a painted weathered basket to display sea shells and tins. The combination of vintage tin objects with costal collectibles makes for a very delightful cottage style look. This idea works nicely for a display in an outdoor summer Flea Market, indoor Antique booth or your beach inspired home.

 This is a very well done display of older collectibles. If it was a painting, the viewer could say that the composition is very successful. But then the gal who made this vignette (spotted at the Sandwich, Mass Flea Market took her display one step further. She added a set of newer wooden kitchen utensils and placed them smack in the middle of her well organized "story". The element of surprise is what attracts the buyer to take another look at this interesting display.

If you look very closely you willl note that what attracts the viewer to this charming vignette of vintage items is the variety of interesting shapes, sizes and heights. Another visual plus is the use of a black tray as the background for white and glass objects. The tray sits on an old covered basket which is another delightful display element used in this collection.

This lovely display was spotted at one of my favorite summer Flea Markets in Sandwich, Mass on Cape Cod. Here ordinary items are mixed together in a wooden tote creating a very delightful display. The dealer at this market grouped together a variety of different items to make for a very charming display. Using an old wooden box or tote that has divided compartments is a great way to organize small objects.

Setting Up Your Art Studio Or Craft Room Space

Discovering Your Art Studio Space Quirks

Once you have shlepped all your art supplies, products, materials, tables, easels etc into your new art space, where do you actually set up shop so you can work comfortably and productively? Each artist has to find out what their unique work vibe is.  Do you like working near windows? Are you an artist who prefers being "hidden" away from public view? "Do you want to paint near the air conditioner or further away? Are you storing paints to close to the sun? Take your time planning out where tables, paints, papers will go and respect the fact that your ideas about placement will keep changing as you begin to work more and more in a given space.

Tips About Art Studio Lighting

The long and the short of this blog is that you shouldn't get too bogged down with where things are going when you first move into a new art studio.  Additionally, be real careful about the kind and location of your lights. I'm still trying to remedy my overhead lighting. Talk to lighting experts and read up on this topic before setting up your lights. While I like the "warmth" of my track lighting in the in between season before the heat goes on,  it gets way too hot under all the lights I ambitiously installed. Yes I want  to be able to see what I  am doing and I also want to light up my gallery walls, but I so think I went way overboard.  So hot that you can fry a chicken is not the goal!  Explore your lighting very carefully.
               
Try hard to take some time to "live in" your space before declaring your interior design a done deal.
