I am always delighted to discover an original kitchenware catalog or advertising materials in good condition. Today I found this wonderful 4 page 1957 advertising insert for West Bend appliances on Etsy.com

This West Bend advertisement is described as featuring " West Bend Appliances, Gift Ware, and Pantry Ware. Models included: Automatic Skillet, Electric Griddle, Bean Pot, Corn Popper, Percolators, Bread Box, Canister Set, Cake Humidor, Serving Oven, Cookie Canister, Shakers, Range Set, Bowlmaster Set, Trig Singing Tea Kettle, Serv-It Platter, Lazy Susan, Penguin Hot and Cold Server, and Top-Stove Ovenette ".

West Bend "Pantry Ware"

The page which really tickled my fancy was the advertisement for West Bend's "Pantry Ware" featured. Many of us have seen bits and pieces of their sets but now we get to see how the entire product line looks. "Pantry Ware " included bread box, 4 piece Canister Set, Cake Humidor, Range Set, Flour n Sugar Shakers, Waste Basket, Cookie Cutter, Canister n Cake Set.

Pantry Ware Came In Polished Aluminum or Copper Color Aluminum

Pantry Ware came in "sparkling polished aluminum or "tarnish-proof copper-color aluminum". Here is how the 1957 advertisement describes these products: "strikingly modern-with a touch of Early American charm. That's the beauty of West Ben's complete line of perfectly matched Pantry Ware. Protective coating prevents finger-printing, keeps every piece bright and new looking".

The West Bend Company is still around and is now celebrating it's 100thy anniversary. Located in West Bend, WI, this kitchen appliance company is a privately held company managed by Focus Products Group. LLC. In 1922, West Bend launched America's first stovetop drip coffee maker. What Is The First Step In Cleaning Out Your Elderly Parents House?

How Do You Begin Cleaning Out An Older Adult's House?

How do you know when going through 25, 40, 50 plus years of mom and dad's stuff, what are the keepers? what needs to be tossed? and what gets passed on? For many adult children, before they even call in a consultant they often are asked by mom and pop to check out the common storage areas. This review of the project(s) ahead is what I refer to as the "looking phase". I consider this step an exploratory visit to determine what it is that is "down under" (basement) or " above" (attic).

The "Looking Phase"

Clean outs are always a major family dilemma for adult children or grandchildren faced with the overwhelming task of sorting through and dispersing of the "treasures" in mom and dad's house. You may of course decide that you need to bring in a professional, but perhaps you are just beginning to take a look at things. How should you approach the "looking phase".

Wear Proper Gear When Doing Clean Outs: Hello Rubber Gloves

First I would encourage all of you to dress in the proper gear when you go snooping around basements, attics and garages that have not seen "the light of day" in quite some time. Pack along plenty of flashlights and bring light bulbs with you. Don't forget the rubber gloves or surgical gloves and wear clothing that you will not worry about ever again.

Do You have Rubber Boots?

Don't laugh, but I tell people to wear rubber boots when they are going down to basements that have not been kept up in years . Oh, I almost forgot.....bring along a disposable surgical mask....it can get pretty damp, musty, dusty etc in basements (and attics or garages). This is not a job for wimps or for folks with health conditions.

Keep Mom And Dad Safe: Fall Risks

And by all means.....keep your parents safe, especially parents who may be at risk for falling. Fragile older adults belong relaxed on the couch in the living room. If mom and or dad are eager to see what they have ignored for 25 years or more, take some pictures, but keep them out of danger's way.

By the way, if you and your family are not up for this type of adventure...and you have the funds to do so....hire some help.

Lot's Of Retro Surprises At "The Country Cottage", Hawley, Pennsylvania

The "Country Cottage" on Main Street in downtown Hawley, Pennsylvania has a great mixture of new and old treasures. Once a popular Multi-dealer antique store, "The Country Cottage" has converted to a large emporium featuring collectibles, jewelry, textiles, gifts, decorating accessories , cottage style furnishing and more.

Retro Collectibles At "The Country Cottage"

On a recent visit to this charming store located in Wayne County in the borough of Hawley, I spotted
plenty of kitchen collectibles and retro items. With a name llike "The Country Cottage", you wouldn't expect to find 50's funk....but I did!

Vintage Red And White Enamel Table

Of course I fell in love with the red and white enamel table and the padded vinyl chairs and stool which sat alongside the table.

If my car wasn't already packed with suitcases and other vacation "stuff' I would have taken the Retro table and chairs home with me. I am still thinking about them!

What I liked about "The Country Cottage" was how the owner mixed everything together coming up with a lot of surprises at every turn. One minute I would be enjoying wonderful handmade rugs and I would look up and find a 1950's lamp and table. Victorian items shared space with Shabby Chic and Mid-Century and the whole concoction just went together quite well.

Looking For Kitchen Collectibles, Retro, Cottage, Mid-Century

As you know, my eye goes to kitchen collectibles as well as retro, cottage, Mid-Century, whimsical and more. But this older group shop has everything from furnishings to toys, paintings, paper, clothing, glassware, pottery etc. It really is a fun place to go poking around.

Hawley, a borough of Wayne County in the Poconos was named for Irad Hawley, the first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company. This Lake Region attracts many year round residents as well as summer vacationers. The nearby Woodloch Pines Family resort brings thousands of visitors to Hawley each year.

I discovered Downtown Hawley when I ventured out of Woodloch and went hunting for antiques and collectibles. Over the years, many of the shops have changed hands, but the Hawley Antique Exchange is still stuffed with lots of good stuff.

"Summer Conversations", Nostalgic And Collectible Contemporary Collages By Connecticut Artist Mark Keigwin

Mixed Media Collages Called "Story Boards"

"Summer Conversations" is East Haven, CT's artist Mark Keigwin's latest exhibit which I caught while visiting the fabulous Guildford Art Center Craft Expo 2011. He calls some of his new work " Story Boards"s. I was lured into Mark's outdoor booth at the Craft Expo by the exciting pastel colors which anchor his mixed media graphic style collages.

Collages Using Updated Nostalgic Elements

At first I assumed that Mark was a talented graphic artist who was carefully composing collages from computer generated graphics. No, I couldn't have been more incorrect. Mark, a Fellow of the American Artists Professional League has a long history as a painter and Fire Artist. Upon a closer look at Mark's work and after a long discussion or "Summer Conversation" with the artist, I learned that all of the elements in his collages are created by his own hand and not reproduced.

Even the lettering shown in these wonderful examples of his nostalgic yet contemporary styled work is done with his own hand. Yes, I'll say it again, Mark did the lettering by hand....no computer.

Using Old Family Photos In Artwork

The photograph images are originals from a family member's collection. All of the blocks of color are painted onto the wood support. Perhaps you thought that they were paper? No, Mark is a master of carefully ruled and composed pieces.

When To Start Liquidating A Family Estate

Trust me on this one...there is no time like right now to get cracking on the eventual project of cleaning out your mom's ( or dad's) house or apartment. What are you waiting for? As I have written about before.....open some closets, visit the attic, peek into the garage and basement.... in other words......get a handle on what you are facing.

Make sure that your parent's house is cared for or you may learn when it is too late that everything that they have been holding onto is damaged or beyond being salvaged. And cleaning out basements that have had leaks, sewage problems and/or mold will cost a great deal of money to liquidate, repair and restore.

Tell Me More About "The Estate"

The time will come when you and your siblings will find yourself downsizing your parent's home or facing the liquidation of an estate. Now when I use the word estate....I'm using it loosely...because many of our parents do not have "estates" like the Rockefeller family. Most of the folks I know, have moms and pops that have a house filled with junk and when the term "estate" is used, I have to chuckle.

Yes I know that everyone thinks their home is their castle, but having said that, the treasures that many people hold onto (broken appliances, camping gear, kindergarten drawings, old receipts etc) are just not the goodies that the big spenders are after at an estate sale" or antique auction.

I too watch all the antique related shows on television about surprises in the attic or basement.....but my experience has been, that the biggest surprise that adult children will discover is that if you don't tackle the clean out sooner than later...the JOB GETS HARDER AND HARDER.
In fact I have head of too many stories of adult children visiting their parent's home and finding that not only have their parent's aged, but so has the house (or apartment). And with age comes all the unwanted household issues such as outdated plumbing, mold, leaks, damaged roof, crumbling foundation, overgrown trees, pests etc.

Here Are Some Common Surprises You May Find If You Wait To Long To Inspect And Clean Out A House

1. A basement, laundry room, den with MOLD.
2. Water in a basement , laundry room storage area with wet boxes of stored items.
3. Moth eaten clothing or other insect and rodent damage.
4. Damaged or wet paper items ( photographs, albums).
5. Rust on metal items (tools, ladders, shelves etc).
6. Rotten wood (old tables, chairs, benches, stools , trunks)

The Portable Playhouse Brings Bead Jewelry Projects to Hospitalized Children And Cancer Centers

Bead And Jewelry Projects Bring Smiles To Hospitalized Children And Cancer Patients

Sometimes you just have to stop and smell the roses. Recently, I was introduced to "The Portable Playhouse", a nonprofit organization founded by Maryann Corey and her sister Patty McGeary, which provides specialized unique bead jewelry and other therapeutic craft/ art programs to Pediatric hospitalized patients and also to children and women recovering from cancer treatments.

"Portable Playhouse" At Woodloch Pines Resort

While visiting Woodloch Pines Resort I had the pleasure of meeting the folks of "The Portable Playhouse" who set up an outdoor tent where guests could try their hand at designed custom made beaded bracelets. The fee to make a bracelet is donated to "The Portable Playhouse" to run their programs around the country.

Maryann and her husband gave up the big city life and two job world to develop "The Portable Playhouse" which is located at 425 Main Street, Forest City, Pennsylvania (Northwest PA ).

The Corey's bought an old building and have transformed it to serve as the headquarters for their non-profit organization and "Crows Nest Art Center" (first floor) as well as their humble residence (second floor) and soon to open women's retreat space (third floor) for cancer survivors . Meet "Silly Milly" And Become A Volunteer.

I was mesmerized by this wonderful idea. Volunteers are needed throughout the country to visit hospitals to provide one on one visits to children and cancer patients.

When volunteers enter a child's room, they are not alone, they are accompanied by "Silly Milly" whose real name is Milly Magpie. "Silly Milly" is a Gund plush doll that has become the mascot of the "Portable Playhouse Project. Like many cancer patients who have lost their hair to chemotherapy, "Silly Milly" wears a hat. "Silly Milly" and the bead volunteers bring lots of smiles to recovering patients.

Another project of "The Portable Playhouse is sponsoring a bead on the "Longest Beaded Necklace Project. Read more about their "Longest beaded necklace project" to raise funds to support their programs.

Have Your Heard of Decorating In "Bronx Renaissance" ?

It's A Colorful And Bold Vintage Style Which Is Back Again

They dared me at my Antique Mall (The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT.) to call the decorating style discussed in this article "Bronx Renaissance". But when I asked some of these same dealers to describe the style of the furnishings and accessories illustrated in this post, one dealer (who will remain anonymous to protect his identity) jested "Bronx Renaissance" Style .

Hollywood Regency Decor With A Twist

As soon as I heard this phrase, I fell in love with it. It was like "Hollywood Regency" with a twist: ...the glitz, the showy collectibles but not exactly the glamour of the rich and famous of The Golden Age of Hollywood. Think of "Bronx Renaissance" as the BRONX of yesteryear where so many of my readers had their humble beginnings.

Bronx Roots

The Bronx, one of New York's, five boroughs is nostalgic for many of us who had parents , grandparents and family who started out there. Today, the Bronx is both home to some of the poorest neighborhoods in New York as well as home to some of the most affluent areas such as Riverdale and Country Club.


Hollywood Style Or Vintage Bronx?

A lot of HOLLYWOOD folks (Woody Allen, Tony Curtis, Al Pacino, Anne Bancroft etc.) came from the BRONX.....well that's another article. So before I used the title "Bronx Renaissance" I wanted to do some homework and make sure I wasn't insulting anyone in the entertainment business or any other business for that matter.Who else used that phrase and what might it imply?

Yankee Stadium Was a "Bronx Renaissance"

To my surprise, the term "Bronx Renaissance" was not associated with anything fishy or any previously discussed decorating trend . The term has been used to describe the re-opening of the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. O.K. that seemed Kosher enough.....nothing controversial about that connection.

So I decided to put it out there......I was coining a new decorating style. For me "Bronx Renaissance" is exciting, colorful, flamboyant, just like the people of New York. I wasn't thinking baseball...I was thinking "OVER THE TOP" decor. In fact if truth me known, I was also thinking GAUDY (aka showy) and FLASHY.

"Bronx Renaissance" Is A "Hollywood Regency" Wannabe Decorating Style

While "Hollywod Regency" conjures up the 1930s glamour and glitz of the Hollywood Golden Age , a popular decorating style for Joan Crawford, in contrast, " Bronx Renaissance" reminds me of "My Cousin Vinnie" starring one of my favorite actors Joe Pesci.

Blitz, Gliz, Gaudy Decorating

O.K. I said it ! Now how many of you remember your childhood and visiting friends, neighbors, cousins who liked to decorate in this BOLD style? Those were the days of lots of blitz, glitz and gaud! Oh my.....it's back! Yes " Bronx Renaissance" retro decor meets Jersey Shore housewives meets vintage Hollywood meets all of the above and more.

Some Common Elements of "Bronx Renaissance" Decor Style

1. Animal prints
2. Large gaudy lamps.
3. Bright colors and palettes.
4. Faux everything.
5. Blitz, glitz, flashy accessories.
6. BIG everything.
7. Mix and match big time.
6. Tall mirrors and lots of hanging crystals.
